High Peak Junction and Carsington

April 16, 2012 in Holiday and Trip Reports by lammie

Took a little trip out today to have a look at the Grebes. First place was HP Junct where I came across the Little Grebe, also took a pic of Tufted Duck and and insect that I would like an ID’d. The first shot of it is in the sun and the second was when it clouded over. Then I went to Carsington where I managed these shots of the GC Grebe and Redshank. Anyway hope you like them.

Called in to Allestree Park to listen/look for L S Woodpecker – nothing doing. This bird is in serious decline.

At Wyver a good collection of birds included Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler, Goosander, Goldeneye, Tufted Duck, Shelduck, Lapwings, Oystercatcher, Sparrowhawk and Buzzard. Reed Bunting on the feeder.

My first singing Blackbird today.

Shipley and Kirk Hallam sightings (and Waxwings).

January 8, 2012 in Latest Patch Sightings by PaulS

A very nice January day meant a bike ride around Shipley Country Park for me and Allison. We stopped of at all the water along the way (and the Ramblers Cafe for a bacon cob!!) and had a good look what was around. Here’s what we saw. I’ll leave the counting to Dave. I’m useless at counting and besides I run out of fingers at 10!!

Straws Bridge. Mute Swan. Canada Goose. Mallard. Moorhen. Coot. Pochard. BH Gull. Tufted duck. Common Gull. Greylag Goose. Shovelar.

Manner Floods. Mute Swan. Canada Goose. Moorhen. BH Gull. Mallard. Tufted Duck. GC Grebe.

Shipley Lake. Moorhen. Coot. BH Gull. Common Gull. Gadwall. Wigeon. Pochard. Tufted Duck. Cormorant. Goosander. Canada goose. Mallard.

Osbournes Pond. Canada goose. Coot. Moorhen. Mallard. BH Gull. Tufted Duck.

Mapperley Lake. BH Gull. Coot. Mallard. Moorhen. GC Grebe. Goosander. Tufted Duck. Cormorant. Mute Swan.

Kirk Halam Lake. BH Gull. Common gull. Mallard. Canada Goose. Mute Swan. Tufted Duck. Kingfisher.

General sightings. Blue tit. Great tit. Blackbird. Redwing. Mistle Thrush. Crow. Jackdaw. Kestrel. Wood Pigeon. Bullfinch. Magpie. Dunnock. Redpoll. Stock Dove. Collared Dove.

And to finish a few shots of the Waxwings on Lime Tree Rise. These were taken yesterday with Maggie. Not the best of conditions but the shots aren’t to shabby. Still around today but now down to 5. The marker on the map indicates the position of the Waxys if you don’t know already.

Cheers

Out checking the Woodside Hieland Coos (I’m trying hard not to give them names…) and two Buzzard flew over West together with a single Cormorant – the latter heading no doubt for Mapperley Res. Lots of Fieldfares about.

On the Pond itself 5 GCGrebe, 8 Tufted Duck and 9 Goosander (7 male, 2 female) and 3 Cormorant.
