Straw’s Bridge 18.07.2015

July 19, 2015 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

Straw’s Bridge was looking good in the evening sunlight. A Migrant Hawker was ‘parked up’ allowing close inspection and an Emperor Dragonfly still patrolled one of the smaller ponds. Somewhat surprisingly a Great Crested Grebe is making a late breeding attempt on Swan Lake and is utilising one of the small rafts the Friends of Straw’s Bridge installed! Success (hopefully). Tufted Duck and a couple of young Common Gulls completed the scene.

Maximum Temperature: 21°C (70°F), Wind Direction: West South Westerly, Wind Speed: 6mph, Visibility: Sunny, Good, Sunset: 21:31 BST.

I got involved with “digiscoping” today involving mainly insects and trying to create a decent work flow for this activity, at present work flow in this area is pretty none existent, I tend to get confused and lose things, usually lens caps! Generally speaking the exercise went well, but with not many pictures taken and only a few “keepers”

I did manage to see a few more birds to including Sand Martins under bridges, obstinate Reed Warblers that won’t sit long enough to get  “snapped” and also a single male Hairy Dragonfly where I’ve noticed them in previous years, around  the Chat Corner area.

Although the day was mainly overcast there were good numbers of Red-eyed Damselflies and Banded Demoiselles.

Tathams Pond. 2 Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Reed Bunting, 2 Sand Martin. Shipley Gate. 13 Swallow, 11 House Martin, 2 Tufted Duck. North Marsh. 6 Reed Bunting, Willow Warbler, 3 Whitethroat. 2 Blackcap, 3 Sedge Warbler, Green Woodpecker. Chat Corner. Skylark, Reed Bunting, Song Thrush. Bennerley. Willow Warbler, Blackcap, 2 Whitethroat, 5 Sand Martin, 2 Swallow, Swift, Green Woodpecker. Butterflies: 9 Small Tortoiseshell, 8 Speckled Wood, 8 Small White. Damselflies. 4 Azure, 2 Common Blue, 27  Red-eyed, 60 Banded Demoiselle. Plus. 1 Hairy Dragonfly.

Another muggy and overcast day but it didn’t seem to bother the insects, good numbers of Butterflies and Dragonflies on the wing including [I think] my first Common Darter, plus a few Great Crested Newt were breaking the surface on the Viaduct Lagoons, sadly, not a lot of birds about but a late Common Tern fishing on the Erewash Canal was nice.

Visibility: Good, Sunset: 21:32 BST.

I thought it high time I did a days birding, one cannot piffle about with creepy crawlies for ever-and what a day! at first I thought as I headed of towards Cossall, I might pick up the odd Buzzard or the odd Skylark, but I didn’t count on not one but three Common Cranes making their way in formation and very stately across the sky, very high and heading north westerly.

I did find a couple of Buzzards, a few more than the odd Skylark and a small flock of Yellow Hammers, and the creepy crawlies ? just one Speckled Wood butterfly – a cracking day!
