A pleasant yomp today, I had a good look and a hard listen for Lesser Spotted Woodpecker in Shipley Wood and for my trouble found two of the Great Spotted variety and a Marsh Tit.

A Water Rail and a Chiffchaff were in Pewit Carr and next door in the coal screen,  were a Tawny Owl and a Green Woodpecker, a trio of Buzzard and 5 Common Gull were at Straws Bridge, plus a Snipe and a couple or Meadow Pipit were at Woodside.

Bennerley: Scaup [drake still on the Erewash canal] 3 Shoveler, 32 Teal, 70 Wigeon, 26 Lapwing.  Chat Corner: 5 Meadow Pipit, 3 Redwing, 8 Long-tailed Tit. Shipley Wood: 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, Marsh Tit, Song Thrush. Shipley View Lagoons: 5 Gadwall, Teal, Little Grebe, Green Woodpecker. Pewit Carr: Water Rail, Chiffchaff, 8 Long-tailed Tit, Green Woodpecker. Max. Temp. Wind Direction: North Westerly, Wind Speed: 10 mph, Visibility: Cloud, Moderate, Sunset: 16:09 GMT.

The plan today was to do a bit of “digiscoping” but luck and the light just wasn’t with me,  consequently the photos in this post were all taken with standard photography using the Nikon S1 and no ‘scope !

Bennerley was buzzing – almost, with ten whole Snipe on the “coal” plus Lapwing, Wigeon and Teal on the marsh plus a few Meadow Pipit and a single Buzzard at Chat Corner.

Shipley Lake held eight Goosander plus a few Shoveler and Pochard, Straws Bridge was mostly Black-headed Gulls plus a few Common Gulls and a few Pied Wagtails feeding along the bank edges. Woodside in the dark turned up just one Tawny Owl calling, it was distant and probably up on Shipley Hill.

Bennerley. 125 Wigeon, 52 Teal, 110 Black-headed Gull, 3 Common Gull, 45 Lapwing, 10 Snipe, Kestrel, 3 Bullfinch. Chat Corner. Buzzard, Kestrel. 3 Meadow Pipit. Shipley Lake. 58 Wigeon, 8 Goosander, 7 Shoveler, 5 Pochard, 6 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Grey Heron, 6 Cormorant. Straws Bridge. 330 Black-headed Gull, 11 Common Gull, 5 Pied Wagtail. Woodside. Tawny Owl, Greenfinch.

Max. Temp. 9°C (48°F) Wind Direction: South Westerly, Wind Speed: 6mph, Visibility: Sun, Cloud, Moderate, Sunset: 16:20 GMT.

Bennerley lived up to its name today, it was in fact a “marsh” with a good flood cover a fair sized area and there was water on either side of Newtons Lane for a change. Good counts of ducks, gulls [black-headed] and even Buzzards with four putting in an appearance, plus half a dozen Snipe and a single Jack Snipe. No “chats” today at Chat Corner but a nice few Meadow Pipit and even more gulls.

A slow start up the hill at Shipley, just on Grey Squirrel in Shipley Wood ! but thing are getting better, slowly, on Shipley Lake but just a few Gadwall on the Shipley View Lagoons. Straws Bridge was worth the look with my first Goosander of the Winter and a Water Rail in Pewit Carr. Again Woodside was quiet with a pair of Lesser Redpoll being the highlight, but a nice day and a nice walk.

Bennerley. 125 Wigeon, 32 Teal, 11 Shoveler, 2 Gadwall, 32 Lapwing, 1 Jack Snipe, 6 Snipe, Grey Heron, 220 Black-headed Gull, 4 Buzzard, 25 Goldfinch, 5 Greenfinch, 5 Redwing, Green Woodpecker. Chat Corner. 240 Black-headed Gull, 28 Meadow Pipit, 2 Reed Bunting, 3 Pheasant, Kestrel. Shipley Lake. 45 Wigeon, 7 Pochard, 6 Teal, 2 Gadwall. 6 Great Crested Grebe, Shipley View Lagoons. 7 Gadwall, 1 Fieldfare. Straws Bridge. 3 Pochard, 1 Goosander [m.] 12 Pied Wagtail. Pewit Carr. Water Rail. Woodside. 2 Lesser Redpoll, Green Woodpecker, 3 Pheasant, Jay.

Nothing much happening at Bennerley or Shipley, although Shipley Lake was slightly better than last week but mainly because of a flight of Lapwings flying over ! After such an uneventful day I decided a little “Owling” might be fun, I thought maybe a Tawny calling or a Barn Owl winging silently over the “mound” I didn’t expect to hear the deep call of a Long-eared Owl somewhere near to the old car parks,  this is not the first Long-eared I’ve heard in the area, all I have to do now is see one !

The first Redwings of the winter did it for me today, just four around Pewit Carr. I always thought the Shipley View Lagoons would hold something a bit special one day and a report of a Water Rail got me looking and listening for quite some around the lagoons, but nothing doing, just the resident, Dabchick, Gaddies and a flock of Collared Dove, always worth a look, I found a single Turtle Dove in just such a flock one year in early November, you never know.

I made the climb out of the Erewash Valley and took a look at Shipley and finally found more than one Meadow Pipit up on the mound, no owls yet though. A single Peacock and two Red Admirals were at the Shipley View Lagoons and three Migrant Hawkers and a couple of Common darters were at Straws Bridge.

Stone Chat

Had a walk around Bennerley this afternoon to look for a Stonechat that was reported but not before seeing a few Wigeon and Snipe at Bennerley.

I hung around Chat Corner for only about twenty minutes before a female/juvenile Stonechat popped up onto a fence post and because I hadn’t seen this species for at least a year at this spot  so, I was rather pleased.

Young Mute Swan

I thought today was going to be a little on the quiet side but things were just a bit slow getting going! A few Wigeon, Fieldfare and Meadow Pipit on the marsh, whilst the North Marsh held a flock of Snipe but just a single Jack Snipe.

A couple of surprises today, first a very smart looking Comma butterfly and an equally smart looking Ruddy Darter, so not a bad day at all.

Almost a total wash-out today, heavy rain for most of the time but I persisted and for my efforts I got to see a few birds including Goosanders, Shovelers and a few Meadow Pipit, I even managed a few photo’s at the Derby Lodge tea rooms, shooting from the shelter of the front porch, the staff had gone home early because of the rain!

I headed of over to Straws Bridge to try out a digiscoping mini-rig comprising Minox 50 mm travel ‘scope and Nikon S1 camera, I need more practice with this set up, plus I need to learn how to correct colour abboration the ‘scope not being of the ED persuasion, but the rig could be a viable option in certain situations.

Knapweed

A funny sort of a day, it started when I tried to sneak up on a Water Rail in the North Marsh, that was just begging to be photographed, it was moving into the marsh one big hop at a time, and led me in to a hole! the rail got away, I got a left “welly boot” full of water that I had to live with for the rest of the day and no photo! Later on the way home I had to intervene in a full scale “punch up” between two family’s of Mute Swans on the Erewash Canal, family A strayed into family B’s patch, male B had male A trapped in the lock and was trying it’s utmost to drown his adversary, I stepped in grabbed male A by the neck, tucked him under my arm and popped him back in his own part of the canal with the missus!

Somewhere between the two incidents I managed to see a few birds, not many, a couple of Meadow Pipits, Green Woodpeckers, Buzzards and northern thrushes, Fieldfare’s  and Redwing’s

A pretty slow day at Woodside, but a small group of Pink-footed Geese flew over to brighten up the day and woodpeckers, green or big and spotty always bring a smile to the face.

I had a wander around Straws Bridge with the camera taking a few snaps, flocks of Jays, not snapped and a drake Pochard, duly snapped!

Digiscoped Cormorants

Today must rate as the best day I’ve had at Attenborough for some time, not just for the birds but for the digiscoping too, I unlocked a few more secrets of this dark art! A Curlew Sandpiper did it for me, plus a Ruff and three Jack Snipe bobbing and darting about and plenty of House Sparrows to point the little camera at.

Nice to see a few Wigeon, Common Gull and just the one Fieldfare back at Bennerley for the winter.

Over the far end of Shipley CP. A pair of Ravens “cronked” their way over and I caught up with them a little later tucked away, unseen in a small copse near the back entrance to Mapperley Reservoir, having a real good conversation!

The day ended nicely with a Little Owl betraying his presence, loudly, at Woodside, on the edge of Shipley Wood – nice!
