A lovely day on October 1st. At the Stanton Lagoon 2 Small Coppers, Common Darters and a couple of Migrant Hawkers, whilst a young Sparrowhawk was very vocal in the woodland. On the Stanton Strip 2 Common Blues (I’ve never seen them in October before), a Speckled Wood and a Peacock butterfly. Green Woodpecker flew over calling. Autumn.

Lovely day for scanning for raptors. 8 Common Buzzard, 2 Kestrel and 3 Sparrowhawk. 2 Ravens headed over high. 3 Jay flying at medium height over woodlands – they always seem to do this in the Autumn. Skylark flying North. Green Woodpecker calling. Coal Tit close by. A single Speckled Wood was the only butterfly I could see.

Decent Autumn weather but not so warm and clouding over later on. Still a few Swallows about and a single House Martin. Green Woodpecker calling. 3 Jay. Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel aloft. 10 Tufties on the pools and a young Coot still with some growing to do. Heron. A Green Sandpiper flew over – my first for the Nutbrook Valley! A couple of Speckled Wood butterflies, two Common Darters and a few Migrant Hawkers despite the chilly weather.

Earlier at Shipley Garden Centre a Hobby went over low at speed – looking for all the world like an out-sized Swift – heading South, off to Africa, I presume. I was just finishing my coffee – luxury birding!

A chilly day with little butterfly and dragonfly activity, but two Speckled Wood, a Green-veined and a Large White made it onto the wing, together with a single Migrant Hawker.
Five Buzzards, four Sparrowhawk and two Kestrels were using the wind for lift, as were about a hundred Swallows and House Martins. I counted thirty two Swifts making their way South in an hour – a good number for the date. In the bushes were a calling, young Chiffchaff, a very vocal Long-tailed Tit, a Goldfinch, Greenfinch, and the almost inevitable Green Woodpecker. Sitting and watching – my kind of birding!

Breezy but still a pleasant enough day. Summer feels like it is on the wane.
Highlight was close views of three Hobbies, two working together in tandem at altitude hunting hirrundines, then joining a third at low level tackling the local dragonfly population. There is nothing like a Hobby in level, powered flight – looks like a stick with a couple of School classroom, wooden rulers for wings!
Kestrel, Sparrowhawk and Buzzard aloft, whilst once again a noisy Green Woodpecker was present but invisible. Little Grebe, single Tuftie and Coot with very small young on the ponds. Song Thrush, Blackcap, Willow Warbler and Bullfinch in the bushes.
A few butterflies in the cooler conditions included three Common Blues, two Gatekeepers and a lonesome Speckled Wood. Brown Hawker and Migrant Hawker and a few Common Darters represented the dragonfly contingent – best try keep out the way of they Hobby….
