I changed my routine a little today, I explored the canal and the fields around Cossall as far as Mill Lane, taking a look at the Millichip Newt Ponds on the way, just a Kestrel and a Grey Heron there, and a similar story at Cossall, it looked like being a quiet day and it was. By the time I got back to Bennerley there were just three Magpies on the frozen main marsh ! there were a few Teal on the river and a few Redwings flitting about, still I had seen a small flock of Lapwing earlier that morning. It was much the same at Chat Corner with small groups of Redwing and Fieldfare moving around and three Snipe rounded of the day.

Max Temperature: 13°C (55°F), Wind Direction: South Westerly, Wind Speed: 14mph, Visibility: Sun, Cloud, Good, Sunset: 18:29 BST.

A nice hike around the Bennerley and Cossall area, Teal and Wigeon numbers seem to be building and on the second sweep of Bennerley in the evening I came upon a Stonechat actually on the marsh, a fair distance away and hard to relocated when it dropped down but despite the failing light I still manage a few record shots. A female or possibly a first winter bird.

A minor “raptor fest” at Cossall plus a flock of Linnet, an unexpected Snipe along the Robinettes Arm stretch of the canal and a nice Small Copper butterfly made for a very pleasant hike.

Dunnock

Dunnock

Insects galore today but very few birds, the Viaduct Lagoons held a few striking Broad-bodied and Four-spotted Chaser Dragonflies, plus a couple of Emerald Damselflies, also there appears to have been an emergence of Comma Butterflies, which is one of my favorite butterfliy species.

Down on Chat Corner two Skylarks were dust bathing, Reed Buntings were popping up everywhere and a single Meadow Pipit, due to a cyclist, escaped the attention of my camera !

Probably the hottest day of the year today and it was certainly verging on the oppressive, Bennerley is beginning to look and feel like a semi-desert !
