Saturday Night At The Newt Pond

April 7, 2012 in Read Posts, Sightings, The Bennerley Birders Pages by DaveJ

Saturday early afternoon actually, but I have been meaning to have a closer look at this little site for some time. At the moment it is a prime piece of wetland with ducks, geese and herons but no waders, although I have seen Lapwing and Golden Plover here. I think as spring and summer progress it will become more interesting with insects and wildflowers and well worth keeping an eye on.

Headed of for a circular walk taking in Cossall, Old Moor Wood and Spring Wood, Buzzards, Skylarks, Meadow Pipit and a single Yellow Hammer, plus, seven Roe Deer heading down the lane to the pub !

Milliship Way Newt Ponds. 2 Canada Goose, 7 Teal, Grey Heron, 45 Black-headed Gull, 2 Pied Wagtail. Cossall. 4 Pheasant, Kestrel, 3 Skylark, Yellow Hammer, Song Thrush, Chiffchaff. Old Moor Wood. 2 Pheasant, 2 Buzzard, Kestrel, Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush, 3 Meadow Pipit, 5 Goldfinch. Spring Wood. 2 Pheasant, Buzzard, 5 Skylark. Plus. 7 Fallow Deer. Bennerley Marsh. 2 Greylag Goose, 4 Canada Goose, 4 Lapwing, 60 Black-headed Gull, 35 Jackdaw, 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Pied Wagtail, Bullfinch.

Kirk Hallam Happenings.

April 3, 2012 in Latest Patch Sightings by PaulS

If you go down to the lake today you’re sure of a big surprise. Well not that big but there have been some changes. DCC have been doing a bit of spring cleaning. They’ve cleared away some of the older trees and pollarded others which has really opened the lake up. They have left some of the fallen trees in the water so as not to disrupt this type of habitat. They’ve also cleared some of the scrub from the side of the Nutbrook. All in all should make the site good in the summer. Plans are afoot to clear the island in the autumn and possibly dredge the lake. Samples have been taken of the leaf litter and if it’s OK it will be pumped onto the meadow across the Nutbrook.

Swans are still on the nest. There are a few Canada Geese around but not as many as in recent weeks. There’s also a lack of Mallards, which is a bit odd? Whether the tree felling has disturbed them only time will tell. A lonesome Cormorant was briefly on the water joined by a couple of Coot and a Moorhen. Had a report from a lady a giant pike had been dragging Coots and Moorhens to a grisly death. She also said it had had a go at the geese too. Must be a big fish! I think we’re gonna need a bigger boat ;) No pike fishing allowed so might be a bit of a concern once the eggs start hatching. Other sightings this morning included Wrens calling from the tops of trees, GS Woodpeckers chasing each other around, Blue, Great, Long Tailed Tits, Pied Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Blackbird, Woodpigeon, Collared Dove, Robin, lots of Water Vole droppings and flowers on the Garlic Mustard.

A look round Bennerley and up as far as Milnhay treatment works turned up a few little surprises, including a lot of Meadow Pipits going through and a Garden warbler at the North Marsh, verging on lateness !

Milnhay treatment works is always worth a look, I’ve seen Merlin, Common Sandpiper and Redshank at this awkward to view site and a ‘scope can be beneficial, today though, a few Pied Wagtail and 2 Grey wagtails.

Erewash Meadows Sun 2nd Oct

October 4, 2011 in Latest Patch Sightings by ChrisLuv

A walk at dawn around Erewash Meadows, from Aldercar up to the post at Big Marsh.

10 Hares were the highlight, several small groups at various points of the walk. A Chiff-chaff was passing through, the usual suspects, Blue, Great and Long Tailed Tits, Robins, Reed Bunting, as well as a large flock of Goldfinch, as well as 4 or 5 Bullfinch. A Goldcrest was by the river as I left the south end.

The water level was very low across the whole reserve, waders were very scarce, Teal, Mallard and a single male Shoveler were the wildfowl on offer. 4 Pied Wagtail and three Grey Wagtail were messing about near the kennels.
