Shipley 5/3/2014

March 5, 2014 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

A lovely day, with lots of birds about and some singing. First Coltsfoot showing and Lesser Celandine in flower. Spring is hopefully nearly here!
Two Sparrowhawk and Buzzard soaring. Nuthatch calling and nest hole prospecting at Shipley Hill. Pairs of Long-tailed Tits around – they breed early these wee beauties. Treecreeper by Osborne’s Pond and on the pond a close view of a female Goosander and a Great Crested Grebe. Three Great Spotted Woodpecker and two Greens calling. Skylarks singing in their usual spot in the South fields of Woodside NR. Cormorants over. Six Teal and a few Tufted on the Hex Pools. Great Crested Grebes and a few Pochard on Shipley Lake and a Grey Wagtail at the outflow into Paul’s Arm – a bit of a rarity these days around here. Two pairs of Bullfinches. A birdy day!

Had a sudden urge to go and explore the lakes and ponds around Shipley to look for Tree Creeper ! I found a few Goosander and other assorted wildfowl but no Tree Creeper, this species is always a bit of a bogie bird for me, it always takes a while to nail, I usually have to wait for one to smack into a tree in front of me, I think its because I can only hear it in perfect conditions, no traffic noise, no wind and no rain, no traffic but lots of rain and some wind today, not ideal !

The trekking umbrella is a most excellent birding or photography accessory,  one straps it to ones person with Velcro fasteners or more accurately to ones back pack and wallah ! hands free for the lifting of “bins” or camera ! if the rain is vertical its great,  if the rain falls to far to the horizontal the lower legs get a little damp, hands-free, 99 % water-proof and 100 % breathable – brilliant !
