Max. Temp. 4°C (39°F), Wind Direction: West South Westerly, Wind Speed: 6 mph, Visibility: Sun, Moderate, Sunset: 15:50 GMT.

I changed my routine a little today, I explored the canal and the fields around Cossall as far as Mill Lane, taking a look at the Millichip Newt Ponds on the way, just a Kestrel and a Grey Heron there, and a similar story at Cossall, it looked like being a quiet day and it was. By the time I got back to Bennerley there were just three Magpies on the frozen main marsh ! there were a few Teal on the river and a few Redwings flitting about, still I had seen a small flock of Lapwing earlier that morning. It was much the same at Chat Corner with small groups of Redwing and Fieldfare moving around and three Snipe rounded of the day.

Max. Temp. 9°C (48°F) Wind Direction: South Westerly, Wind Speed: 6mph, Visibility: Sun, Cloud, Moderate, Sunset: 16:20 GMT.

Bennerley lived up to its name today, it was in fact a “marsh” with a good flood cover a fair sized area and there was water on either side of Newtons Lane for a change. Good counts of ducks, gulls [black-headed] and even Buzzards with four putting in an appearance, plus half a dozen Snipe and a single Jack Snipe. No “chats” today at Chat Corner but a nice few Meadow Pipit and even more gulls.

A slow start up the hill at Shipley, just on Grey Squirrel in Shipley Wood ! but thing are getting better, slowly, on Shipley Lake but just a few Gadwall on the Shipley View Lagoons. Straws Bridge was worth the look with my first Goosander of the Winter and a Water Rail in Pewit Carr. Again Woodside was quiet with a pair of Lesser Redpoll being the highlight, but a nice day and a nice walk.

Bennerley. 125 Wigeon, 32 Teal, 11 Shoveler, 2 Gadwall, 32 Lapwing, 1 Jack Snipe, 6 Snipe, Grey Heron, 220 Black-headed Gull, 4 Buzzard, 25 Goldfinch, 5 Greenfinch, 5 Redwing, Green Woodpecker. Chat Corner. 240 Black-headed Gull, 28 Meadow Pipit, 2 Reed Bunting, 3 Pheasant, Kestrel. Shipley Lake. 45 Wigeon, 7 Pochard, 6 Teal, 2 Gadwall. 6 Great Crested Grebe, Shipley View Lagoons. 7 Gadwall, 1 Fieldfare. Straws Bridge. 3 Pochard, 1 Goosander [m.] 12 Pied Wagtail. Pewit Carr. Water Rail. Woodside. 2 Lesser Redpoll, Green Woodpecker, 3 Pheasant, Jay.

Max. Temp. 14c. Wind Direction: South Westerly, Wind Speed: 13mph, Visibility: Sun, Cloud, Good, , Sunset: 16:35 GMT.

First day of November and there are still wildflowers in bloom and the odd butterfly on the wing. I caught a perfect view of a Jack Snipe as it got up and quickly put down again at Chat Corner and the “northern thrushes” were very much in evidence but sadly no further sightings of Golden Plover on the marsh.

Bennerley. 190 Black-headed Gull, 35 Wigeon, 16 Lapwing, Snipe, Grey Heron. Kestrel, Meadow Pipit, Green Woodpecker, 9 Redwing. Chat Corner. Over at Chat Corner, three Stonechat, two males and a female taking advantage of the abundance of the new perching posts, come on you Corn Bunting !

The Bennerley coal plant is now a gated area ! gates have been installed at both ends of the concrete road so I imagine that the “sides” will be fenced off soon , motor bikes and 4X4′s are definitely not welcome, if you haven’t eaten all the pies you can just about squeeze past the gate.Other work is going on around Chat Corner on the Severn Trent side, an elaborate new stock fence is  being installed, there is a “no mans land” between the fence and the hedgerows, whether this is to protect the hedgerow I’m not sure but that would be good.

First birds of the day, almost’ were Jack Snipe and Snipe plus Green and Great Spotted ‘peckers, a nice few Redwing, likewise Long-tailed Tit and a trio of Migrant Hawker Dragonflies !

Bennerley. 2 Jack Snipe, 3 Snipe, 4 Lapwing, 85 Black-headed Gull, 3 Grey Heron, Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 45 Redwing, 40 Goldfinch, 4 Bullfinch, 32 Long-tailed Tit, Meadow Pipit. Chat Corner. Kestrel, 2 Meadow Pipit.
