Max. Temp. Wind Direction: Westerly, Wind Speed: 13mph, Visibility: Very Sun, Good,Sunset: 15:50 GMT.

A quick passage through Bennerley and on to probably the best days birding I’ve had around Shipley for some time, mainly due to a good few Wigeon, Goosander, a drake Mandarin and a single Willow Tit. The Mandarin was on the far side of Mapperley Reservoir and I was on the other side with the sun in my face, the Mandarin had  the undergrowth in front of it as did I on my side, very hard to focus on the subject, the Goosander shots were taken through holes in the perimeter fence of Shipley Lake, so the photography ain’t that good. Not to worry, it was still a good day !

Bennerley. Sparrowhawk, 2 Bullfinch, 6 Redwing, 2 Common Gull, 35 Black-headed Gull. Shipley Lake. 26 Goosander, 85 Wigeon, 4 Pochard, 4 Shoveler, 3 Gadwall, 6 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Little Grebe, Grey Heron, 2 Common Gull,  220 Black-headed Gull. Shipley Hill. Willow Tit, 6 Redwing, 2 Fieldfare, 4 Stock Dove.  Mapperley Reservoir. Mandarin [m.] 6 Goosander, 3 Great Crested Grebe, 96 Canada Goose, 2 Greylag Goose. Woodside. 4 Snipe, Grey Heron, 4 Bullfinch, 1 Nuthatch, Great Spotted Woodpecker.

Max. Temp. 13°C (55°F), Wind Direction: West South Westerly, Wind Speed: 9 mph, Visibility: Sun, Cloud, Good, Sunset: 16:33 GMT.

Wildfowl numbers are creeping up on Shipley Lake, but the “hotspot” today was Shipley Hill with flocks of Redwing, tit and finch flocks, including a couple of Goldcrests and a Barn Owl over the opencast mine – among the pigeons ! I think it came out of farm buildings between the hill and the mine.

Woodside. 3 Cormorant, Mistle Thrush, Green Woodpecker. Shipley Lake. 7 Cormorant, 6 Gadwall, 6 Pochard, 4 Teal, 42 Wigeon, 5 Great Crested Grebe, Grey Heron.. Shipley Park.  30 Goldfinch, 4 Mistle Thrush, Grey Heron, Shipley Hill. Barn Owl [ over the opencast mine] 2 Goldcrest, 40 Goldfinch, 12 Greenfinch, 90 Redwing, 3 Jay. Mapperley Reservoir. 4 Great Crested Grebe, 55 Redwing. Mapperley Wood. 25 Redwing, 30 Goldfinch, 6 Pheasant.

Apart from a pretty good Wigeon count not much happening at Bennerley, two feral Greylag Geese had to be checked out to make sure they were not of the “farm yard” persuasion, feral’s  count farmyards don’t! I did notice today, there wasn’t a single Redwing or Fieldfare at Bennerley today. I missed a really good chance of a good photo of a Kingfisher, so easy i was bound to mess it up! I tend to bin all photos of Kingfisher because I have not managed one yet that is up to the shot of this species I really want!

Bennerley. 2 Greylag Goose, 220 Wigeon, 10 Teal, 130 Black-headed Gull, 5 Common Gull, 3 Grey Heron, 2 Bullfinch, Greenfinch. Chat Corner. 4 Herring Gull, Buzzard, Kingfisher, 2 Pheasant.

A flock of Bullfinches , well nearly a flock, opened the proceedings along with a single female Lesser Redpoll, a nice group of Teal were south of Newton’s Lane with a quartet of Shoveler among the Wigeon on the marsh. A single Snipe was at Chat Corner along with a local scarcity, a pair of Greylag Goose and after a short absence, Fieldfare and Redwing were back in numbers.

Bennerley. 190 Wigeon, 18 Teal, 4 Shoveler, 2 Grey Heron, 2 Cormorant, 11 Lapwing, 160 Black-headed Gull, 7 Common Gull, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 11 Lapwing, Lesser  Redpoll [f] 8 Bullfinch, 3 Greenfinch, 12 Goldfinch, 14 Long-tailed Tit, 2 Mistle Thrush. Chat Corner, 2 Greylag Goose, 1 Snipe, 75 Fieldfare, 48 Redwing, , Mistle Thrush.

The “Lodge” feeders were busy this morning, all manner of avian kind! Today was the Sunday stroll,

Female Tufted Duck

so it was straight along the canal leaving the Black-headed and Common Gulls behind at Bennerley, towards Shipley Lock picking up a few Tufted Duck and a rather handsome drake Goosander, then passing Malcolm’s MFN club and over the railway foot bridge to Bentley’s Plantation, a small copse-like wood that has in recent years held Lesser Spotted Woodpecker but today there was just lesser’s  larger cousin the Great Spotted Woodpecker. My destination turned out to be Mapperley Reservoir which turned out to be to be the best place to be with Goosanders, Shoveler’s, Great Crested Grebe and a Tawny Owl and evensong was provided by an extremely noisy and very busy corvid roost, very relaxing! love it!

Common Gull

Thursday, 12th. December, 2013. Bennerley Marsh.

A very murky day but a good day for Common Gull, we usually get one or two but there seems to be a few more this year. A couple of Green Woodpeckers was nice, they are a bit scarce of late and several pairs use to breed, I only confirmed two pairs this year, still “blips” do occur.

Bennerley. 100 Black-headed Gull, 10 Common Gull, 3 Grey Heron, 80 Wigeon,  Snipe, 14 Goldfinch, 2 Greenfinch, 3 Bullfinch, 2 Green Woodpecker, 118 Redwing,42 Fieldfare, 3 Mistle Thrush,  Buzzard, Kestrel,Chat Corner. 4 Snipe, 2 Goldfinch,42 Redwing, 55 Fieldfare, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gull,

Redwing

The Wigeon took some finding today, but I found a few less than of late, they do commute and can be found anywhere from Bennerley across to Bennerley South and through to the Millichip Newt Ponds. Good to find a Jack Snipe up at the North Marsh along with a handful of Common Snipe, plus of course, “Northern Thrushes” everywhere!

Bennerley. 130 Black-headed Gull, 5 Common Gull, 40 Wigeon, 12 Lapwing, 2 Snipe, Grey Heron, 96 Fieldfare, 67 Redwing, 5 Mistle Thrush, Coal Tit, 130 Starling. Chat Corner. Jack Snipe, 8 Snipe, Kestrel, Buzzard, 42 Fieldfare, 40 Redwing. North Marsh. 28 Snipe, 2 Grey Heron, Pheasant, 60 Redwing, 5 Fieldfare.

Female Goosander

I thought I would pop next door and pay a visit to a neighbouring  patch, Woodside NR, I’ve not been to this Derbyshire Wildlife Trust site for a while and I was Interested, it being a new venture, to see how things were progressing, not much as it goes, its a steady progress, a bit more fencing and site management. Still, Shipley lake held a lot of Wigeon, it quite an important site for this species, lets hope the developers realise this, Mapperley Reservoir held a group of Shoveler and a single female Goosander. Elsewhere in the area, Siskin, a Goldcrest and those pesky “northern Thrushes, but no Waxwings!

Bennerley.  90 Black-headed Gull, 8 Common Gull, 3 Bullfinch, 88 Redwing, 3 Mistle Thrush, 2 Fieldfare. Shipley Lake. 230 Wigeon, 35 Gadwall, 7 Shoveler, 10 Great Crested Grebe, 220 Coot, 6 Cormorant. Woodside. 70 Fieldfare, 45 Redwing, 2 Mistle Thrush, Goldcrest, 21 Siskin, Green Woodpecker, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Teal. Shipley View Lagoons, 4 Teal, 2 Gadwall, Little Grebe. Mapperley Reservoir. 11 Shoveler, Goosander [f.] 3 Great Crested Grebe.

A pretty slow day at Woodside, but a small group of Pink-footed Geese flew over to brighten up the day and woodpeckers, green or big and spotty always bring a smile to the face.

I had a wander around Straws Bridge with the camera taking a few snaps, flocks of Jays, not snapped and a drake Pochard, duly snapped!

Digiscoped Cormorants

Today must rate as the best day I’ve had at Attenborough for some time, not just for the birds but for the digiscoping too, I unlocked a few more secrets of this dark art! A Curlew Sandpiper did it for me, plus a Ruff and three Jack Snipe bobbing and darting about and plenty of House Sparrows to point the little camera at.

Sunday, 20th. October, 2013. Bennerley Marsh/Woodside.

Nice to see a few Wigeon, Common Gull and just the one Fieldfare back at Bennerley for the winter.

Over the far end of Shipley CP. A pair of Ravens “cronked” their way over and I caught up with them a little later tucked away, unseen in a small copse near the back entrance to Mapperley Reservoir, having a real good conversation!

The day ended nicely with a Little Owl betraying his presence, loudly, at Woodside, on the edge of Shipley Wood – nice!

A family of Long-tailed Tits at Bennerley, Common Terns with one juvenile and Great Crested Grebes with two chicks at Mapperley Reservoir shows things are moving alone nicely.

Plenty of Dingy Skippers, Small Heaths and Common Blues to enjoy although a few may have been flattened by a motor bike and a quad bike, this pair of pillocks seem to think it was great fun to kick up as much dust as possible ! still’ my duty was clear and was duly fulfilled !
