I suppose a “tick list” of Great Skua, Long-tailed Skua and Glossy Ibis was a bit ambitious but the Skuas had been seen over the last few days and the Ibis is known to drop in sometimes, it would have been nice but it was not to be. A Snow Goose of dubious origin was seen, I don’t think it was the “Ross’s” that frequents Attenborough, I got an excellent view of it flying. Bird of the day was a single Green Sandpiper and Lapwings were strangely conspicuous by their absence ! There were a lot of Meadow Pipits, they were all over the place but no other “small brown jobs” apart from House Sparrows were Seen.

The Day List. Feral Rock Dove, Wood Pigeon, Mute Swan, Greylag Goose, Canada Goose, Egyptian Goose, Snow Goose, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Gadwall, Wigeon, Pochard, Common Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Black-headed Gull, Cormorant, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Coot, Moorhen, Grey Heron, Little Egret, Green Sandpiper, Robin, Blackbird, Mistle Thrush, Long-tailed, Tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Meadow Pipit, Green Woodpecker, House Sparrow, Staling, Carrion Crow, Magpie, Jackdaw, Rook, Kestrel, Buzzard.

Shipley View Hex Lagoons 5/7/2014

July 6, 2014 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

Lovely day again later on. At last, my first Gatekeepers of the season – four in total. Lots of Ringlets and Meadow Browns. A few Large Skippers looking quite tatty now but dozens of ‘Smessex’ (Small/Essex) Skippers – I checked a group in one spot by the lagoons and they were all Essex. Plenty of Common Blue Damselflies and a couple of Brown Hawkers were hawking at speed. Whitethroat and Chiffchaff still singing and a Kestrel soaring. Little Grebe on the pools. Somewhat unexpectedly a Raven calling.

Hex Pools 8/9/2013

September 8, 2013 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

An hour from my vantage point looking West and a walk around the pools. A change of season was in the air for sure.
5 Speckled Wood, 2 Common Blue butterflies. Migrant Hawker.
Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker. Chiffchaff. Raven over Mapperley.
250 House Martins overhead was quite something. Small flocks of Starlings heading East later on. Buzzards soaring in distance and 3 directly overhead. 2 Sparrowhawk soaring and hunting. Cormorant fly-past. On the pools 8 Tufted Duck and a Little Grebe.

August 8, 2013 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

An hour at Wyver.

A Whinchat on the thistles was great to see – my favourite summer visitor of the bird world and sadly now so uncommon. Over 70 Lapwings on the mud and in the shallows and a couple of Little Grebe, several Teal and a Gadwall out in the main pool. Twenty odd Swifts moving South at altitude and a Buzzard soaring. A pristine Brimstone butterfly was good to see as was a Comma. Brown Hawker and Migrant Hawker.
