Storm Clouds Over Bennerley

June 22, 2013 in Photo Posts, Sightings, The Bennerley Birders Pages by Bennerley

Not a pleasant day at Bennerley today, but two very pleasant ladies had turned out armed with clipboards to take an inventory of the site plant species on behalf of the flora recorder for Nottinhamshire, they appeared taken by the plants they were finding, especially the many sedge’s they had come across.

The weather was poor so not much to report, not much seen, but a couple of butterflies made the effort, first a single Dingy Skipper and then a splendidly fresh Gatekeeper, plus a few hardy Common Blue Damselflies, meanwhile a single Skylark was holding his own from a pile of soil on the building site that is Chat Corner.

Bennerley. Cormorant, Black-headed Gull, Common Tern, 3 Grey Heron, 5 Lapwing, 12 Swallow, 3 Sand Martin, 7 Swift, Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Greenfinch, Green Woodpecker. Chat Corner. Sky Lark, Meadow Pipit, 3 Swift.

Butterflies. Dingy Skipper, Gatekeeper. Plus. Common Blue Damselflies.

Woodside 2/6/2013

June 2, 2013 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

Lovely sunny day produced the goods with some of the butterflies. I counted 15 Dingy Skippers in two areas of the Reserve and 11 Small Heath, 2 Common Blues, a Small Copper, a very faded, female Brimstone looking surprisingly like a Large White in flight, and a Speckled Wood. Still a few Peacocks flitting about and plenty of Green-veined Whites. A couple of teneral Common Blue Damsels. Green Woodpeckers were very vocal as always, a Common Tern flew South over the Reserve and a Lesser Whitethroat was still singing near the Hex Pools – where one more Dingy was flying on the steep bank to the NW.

Returned from Scotland …. the Dingies were calling me…

At least 35 Dingy Skipper at Stanton, also 2 Common Blue, 3 Small Heath,  Brimstone, Peacocks, Small Copper, G V and Large White, an Orange Tip and a Lizard! In the wider area a few more Dingies, Small Heath and the commoner butterflies. Cinnabar Moths. Sadly, no Brown Argus. 2 Four Spotted Chasers were my first Odonata of the season. Two cracking Marsh Orchids were a tad early.

At the Hex Pools, 5 more Dingies and the commoner butterflies including 3 Speckled Woods, a Common Blue Damselfly and a Blue Tailed, too. 6 young Coot growing up nicely now on the pools and 3 Reed Warbler singing. Lesser Whitethroat singing as were 2 Skylark over the adjacent Woodside Meadows. Family party of Long Tailed Tits. Great Spotted Woodpecker flew across Mapperley Wood and several Swifts were hunting high up – I don’t think they have settled to breed yet.  A Hobby dashed through!
