Temp. 6°C (43°F)-4°C (39°F), Wind Direction: North Easterly, Wind Speed: 12 mph, Visibility: Cloud, Good, Sunset: 18:09 GMT.

Took my circular walk as far as Old Moor Wood and back through Cossall.

Dougie picked up the scent of Fallow Deer near Spring Wood and we stalked them like a pair of pro’s! making our way closer to shoot them – with a camera of course! although the weather wasn’t good for photography it was still a good experience.

Six singing Wrens were all in a small area at Cossall, a Wheatear was in fields around Spring Wood and a Tree Creeper led me a merry dance at Old Moor Wood, no photos but it cleared up a stubborn tick for the year, all in all a pleasant day.

First of my long Sunday strolls, this year, through Bennerley and on to Strelley, on this occasion looking for Yellow Hammer but no joy today, but I did hear albeit briefly, a Goshawk calling.

I ended up at Strelley Church, I’d heard a rumour of Peregrines in the area but all I found was two Starlings!

Nothing dramatic at Attenborough today, lots of bird species but I had to wait until dusk for the main prize, a single Bittern plus a very visible Water Rail on the grass apron in front of the Tower Hide, sadly no Cetti’s Warbler, cake and eating it come to mind!

Bennerley Marsh To Shipley

Max. Temp. Wind Direction: Westerly, Wind Speed: 13mph, Visibility: Very Sun, Good,Sunset: 15:50 GMT.

A quick passage through Bennerley and on to probably the best days birding I’ve had around Shipley for some time, mainly due to a good few Wigeon, Goosander, a drake Mandarin and a single Willow Tit. The Mandarin was on the far side of Mapperley Reservoir and I was on the other side with the sun in my face, the Mandarin had  the undergrowth in front of it as did I on my side, very hard to focus on the subject, the Goosander shots were taken through holes in the perimeter fence of Shipley Lake, so the photography ain’t that good. Not to worry, it was still a good day !

Bennerley. Sparrowhawk, 2 Bullfinch, 6 Redwing, 2 Common Gull, 35 Black-headed Gull. Shipley Lake. 26 Goosander, 85 Wigeon, 4 Pochard, 4 Shoveler, 3 Gadwall, 6 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Little Grebe, Grey Heron, 2 Common Gull,  220 Black-headed Gull. Shipley Hill. Willow Tit, 6 Redwing, 2 Fieldfare, 4 Stock Dove.  Mapperley Reservoir. Mandarin [m.] 6 Goosander, 3 Great Crested Grebe, 96 Canada Goose, 2 Greylag Goose. Woodside. 4 Snipe, Grey Heron, 4 Bullfinch, 1 Nuthatch, Great Spotted Woodpecker.

Max. Temp. 4°C (39°F), Wind Direction: West South Westerly, Wind Speed: 6 mph, Visibility: Sun, Moderate, Sunset: 15:50 GMT.

I changed my routine a little today, I explored the canal and the fields around Cossall as far as Mill Lane, taking a look at the Millichip Newt Ponds on the way, just a Kestrel and a Grey Heron there, and a similar story at Cossall, it looked like being a quiet day and it was. By the time I got back to Bennerley there were just three Magpies on the frozen main marsh ! there were a few Teal on the river and a few Redwings flitting about, still I had seen a small flock of Lapwing earlier that morning. It was much the same at Chat Corner with small groups of Redwing and Fieldfare moving around and three Snipe rounded of the day.

Millichip Newt Pond. Kestrel, Grey Heron. Cossall. Buzzard, Kestrel, 18 Redwing, Pheasant. Bennerley. Coal Tit [Bennerley Lodge] 9 Teal, 18 Lapwing, 29 Fieldfare, 42 Redwing, 2 Mistle Thrush.  Chat Corner. 1 Reed Bunting, 3 Meadow Pipit, 27 Fieldfare, 53 Redwing, 3 Snipe, 2 Cormorant.
