Max. Temp. 10°C (50°F), Wind Direction: East South Easterly, Wind Speed: 6 mph, Visibility: Moderate, Sunset: 15:54 GMT.

Thought I would have a little poke around St. Chads Water at Church Wilne today, I heard the were a few Goosander and a quartet of Little Egrets, but sadly just one Goosander, a drake and no Little Egrets ! I headed of along a bridle path with the ominous sounding name of Coffin Walk ending upper at the safer sounding Orchid Wood, a smallish wood with huge amounts of Gorse, but not much birdlife, a single Goldcrest, a couple of Lesser Redpoll, a pair of those Goosander over and a nice sized flock of Lapwing over, plus lots of Redwing and Fieldfare in the general area.

St. Chads Water. 5 Shoveler, Goosander, 2 Shoveler, 4 Great Crested Grebe, 4 Grey Heron, 90 Fieldfare,  150 Redwing, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Green Woodpecker. Orchid Wood/Coffin Walk. 2 Lesser Redpoll, Goldcrest, 80 Fieldfare, 35 Redwing, 160 Lapwing [over] 2 Goosander [over] 4 Common Gull [over]

Shipley and Mapperley 22/09/2014

September 23, 2014 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

A walk around on a nice day. Several Speckled Woods about, two Red Admiral, two Peacock, Green-veined White and a Small Copper in the ‘butterfly box’ at Woodside. Migrant Hawkers still about and Common Darter, with a single, resplendent Southern Hawker hunting at Mapperley Wood. On the bird front nine Buzzards soaring together (I thought I was in Spain!), a distant pair of Kestrels being buzzed by a latish Hobby and a Sparrowhawk up, too. On Shipley Lake seven Great Crested Grebe whilst four Gadwall were loafing on Paul’s Arm and the inevitable Green Woodpecker calling. On Mapperley Reservoir another three Great Crested Grebe with Buzzard and Kestrel soaring over the woodland. In the Mapperley Wood Reserve a Nuthatch was spotted, with another from the hide together with Great, Blue and Coal Tits, a Chaffinch and the distant cronking of a Raven. Finally, a single Gadwall on the Hex Pools.

Shipley and Mapperley 15/11/2013

November 15, 2013 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

Not been able to get out of late, but managed it today – couldn’t let the DJ be the sole contributor!

Plenty of Jays, two Green and one Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatches at Shipley Hill and Mapperley Wood. Long-tailed Tits at two locations. A scattered group of Gold and Green finches betrayed a dashing male Sparrowhawk whilst a female was seen later by Mapperley village. On Shipley Lake a couple of dozen Wigeon, five Shoveler, a Heron, two Great Crested Grebe and two Gadwall. Good views of a Tree Creeper at Shipley Hill. Mapperley Pond had another five Shoveler – close views of the drakes resplendent in their new post-eclipse plumage – several Tufties, two more Great Crested Grebe and a good thirty Black-headed Gulls. Five Meadow Pipit in a small group off Slack Lane and a Cormorant and several Redwings over.
At the Hex Lagoons fairly quiet but six Gadwall were of note.

Later on in Ilkeston a Song Thrush in song – my first of the new season!

Shipley and Woodside 22/09/2013

September 23, 2013 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

A beautiful day, and a real surprise with the warmth and sunshine – just when I said that Summer was well and truly over! At the Hex Pools several Tufted Duck and a couple of Little Grebe now in residence, and the young Chiffchaff still calling away. From my ‘vantage point’ several Buzzard, two Sparrowhawk and a Kestrel, a bounding Great Spotted Woodpecker, Greenfinches, and dozens of hirrundines feeding really high up and drifting South. A couple of late Common Blue butterflies, 3 Comma and Speckled Woods and a few Migrant Hawkers and Common Darters. At Woodside a Jay, more Commas and a couple of Small Tortoiseshell. Shipley Lake is building up its winter complement of waterfowl including over a hundred Coot, about 40 Wigeon, 5 Great Crested Grebe and several Tufties. At Shipley Hill lots more Speckled Woods, a Peacock and plenty of Migrant Hawkers – I have never seen so many insects high up in the sky, certainly not this year at any rate. More Buzzards soaring and what looked like a distant Osprey but I couldn’t be sure, however 3 Hobbies indulging in aerobatics catching insects (probably high-altitude dragonflies) were a real treat. More Tufties and 3 Great Crested Grebe on Mapperley Pond and 2 Buzzards and another Sparrowhawk over the woodland fringes, whilst yet more Swallows and House Martins were hawking and dipping over the water. Autumn approaches, nonetheless….

Mapperley Pond, Shipley Hill and Hex Pools 17/03/2013

March 17, 2013 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

A cold day but no wind made it much more tolerable. For a while the rain turned to sleet and snow and everything in between so I got wet and went home to dry out – I went back out to the Hex Pools for a second walk and I’m glad I did!

Mapperley. 2 Little Owls, one of which was calling. 7 Goosander on pond. 7 Cormorant. 3 pairs of Great Crested Grebe displaying plus one bird in winter plumage. At least 4 Great Spotted Woodpeckers drumming and a woodpecker drumming that sounded like Lesser Spot but I couldn’t see it! Green Woodpecker calling. A few Fieldfare and Redwing, one of which was trying to sing!

Straws Bridge – brief stop in the rain. Lots of Black-head Gull with adults now with their chocolate-brown hoods. Drake Pochard.

Shipley Hill. Song Thrush and Blackbird singing, as were Great Tit and Blue Tit. Several Nuthatch and a few Long-tailed Tit and Coal Tit. Stock Dove and Chaffinch singing. Buzzard soaring.

Hex Pools. 2 Tufties and a new bird for there for me – a Great Crested Grebe. Small flock of about 20 Redwing. Great Spotted Woodpecker drumming. Skylark. 5 Buzzards soaring over Mapperley. 3 Reed Bunting, Greenfinch and Goldfinch. I was just about to leave when a last scan revealed an Osprey soaring high and drifting North over Shipley – the early bird catches the birder!

Long Eaton GP’s. & Attenborough NR.

March 2, 2013 in Read Posts, Sightings, The Bennerley Birders Pages by Bennerley

Rather than join the throng  at Attenborough I opted to have a good look at Long Eaton GP’s first, good thing too ! Whilst looking for’ or rather trying to re-locate a female Red-breasted Merganser which I had seen on arrival, I stumbled on a Sanderling kindly put up by a passing dog ! Nice doggie ! The hunt for the elusive “Merg” continued a pace and I was joined by another birding type and after several Goosander, Goldeneye and  a couple of Green Sandpipers we finally caught up with it in exactly the same spot I first saw it !

Had the time to pass an hour at Attenborough mainly around the the Clifton Pond, plenty of Goldeneye with some males displaying, three Snipe and more Goosander on the “Tween” and just as it got dark, two Oyster Catcher on the Sailing Lake – not a bad day at all !
