In search of Lesser Spotted Woodie 22/03/2012

March 22, 2012 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

Tried three local, former sites for LSW but no luck – this really has become a scarce bird.

At Brackley Gate/Drum Hill lots of common birds in full song – Great Tit, Blue Tit, Coal Tit, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Robin, Wren, Blackbird and a Nuthatch callling. 8 Buzzards and Sparrowhawk and Kestrel soaring. L t Tit building a nest – what a miracle their nest is!

Smalley Dam. Lovely spot this. Community venture. A Buzzard here was on a post sticking out of the water – I was half expecting it to plunge-dive but no joy!

Steeples Wood (Bentley Plantation). Excellent views of a pair of G S Woodpecker.

A Mapperley Sort Of Morning.

February 11, 2012 in Featured by PaulS

Spent a very pleasant few hours around Mapperley Wood this morning. Saw the following wildlife.

Buzzards (pr). Kestrel. BH Gull. Bullfinch (m). House Sparrow. Moorhen. Wood Pigeon. Blackbird. Redwing. Fieldfare. Canada Goose. Blue Tit. Great Tit. LT Tit. Willow Tit. Coal Tit. Dunnock. Wren. Robin. Chaffinch. Jay. Grey Squirrel. Wood Pigeon. Starling. Collared Dove. GS Woodpecker. Mallard.

One thing of note. We spotted a Jay with a deformed beak.

This is the fourth different species of bird we’ve seen with this problem. Don’t recall it being so common years ago?? Anyone else any experience of this.

Hundreds of Redwings and Fieldfares stripping berries off trees in Mapperley village. Lots of birds down at the hide too. Wonder if this years big garden bird watch is going to throw up some misleading figures about bird numbers?

Love days like today. Crisp, cold, bright and clear. And plenty of wildlife to boot!!

Garden Bird Feeders 4/01/2012

January 4, 2012 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

At last, my feeders are receiving more avian attention.

A few Long-tailed Tits have joined in on the fat balls, or at least they do when the Starlings so allow. Chaffinch now visiting, along with Robin, Great, Blue and Coal Tit.

Sparrowhawk in the small bush right outside my front door this morning – I could see its mean-looking, sulphur-yellow eye contemplating ‘my’ wee birdies…

Mysterious Moorgreen

Garlic Mustard [I prefer jack-by-the-hedge]

Back at Moorgreen Reservoir and woods today for a look around, came in the back door from “Watnall International Airport” after an uneventful stroll via Greasley Church Yard.

Things picked up a bit on reaching the woodland edge with the first of four or more soaring Buzzards in the company of a few “cousins”

Its getting more difficult finding birds with spring progressing nicely, I was hoping for my particular holy grail, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. It took me a long time to get on this little beauties Christmas  like card list so now every time I see one, it’s a little like the first time, I love the little chaps and chappettes ! but not today, Coal Tit, Green Woodpecker, and a trio of Nuthatch, still nice to see tho’ and hear of course.

Out of the trees and in to the central valley and more soaring raptors and a nice group of twelve Fallow Deer, although about as distant as they could be over the other side of the valley, I decided on a quick “photo snipe” the sun was out, the light was good, so’ let’s go for it thinks I, and go for it I did ! not a bad result, see photo post, love it !

Also in the photo post is Wood Anemone, one of my favorite wild flowers and a single very lonely Swallow on a wire outside the keepers cottage.

Taking The Spring Air At Shipley

Willow Tit

Chaffinch

I saw my first butterflies today, two Small Tortoiseshell so’ that was nice. Spring is progressing nicely every where you look and listen, Chiffchaffs, wildflowers and butterflies.

A small flock of Golden Plover flew over the linear lagoons at Shipley Park and on the lake were a pair each of Shoveler and Pochard, plus about a hundred Black-head Gulls, quite a few showing the smart black hoods that give them their name. Owls seemed to be everywhere, at dusk a Little Owl was calling somewhere between Mapperley reservoir and Horsepool Hill, it was really close but I just could not locate the little devil ! and three Tawny Owls were calling from three corners of the park.

The diminutive Willow Tit is hopefully alive and well at the Mapperley Wood hide and was joined at table by Coal Tit and several other avian species, oh’ and that pesky squirrel was getting his nose in the trough as well !

Mapperley Mess Around

Reed Bunting

Chaffinch

Finally got around to getting a few decent shots, I’m really pleased with the chaffinch, I do enjoy the subjects with out the feeders.

On the way to Mapperley I dropped into Shipley Lake, saw a lot of gulls mainly Black-headed with a few Common mixed in, plus a few ducks, Pochard, Gadwall and Shoveler and a handful of Great Crested Grebe’s, one pair displaying .
Up at Mapperley Wood at the feeders, the squirrels were running amok ! they were every where, fortunately they soon cleared of and left the place to the birds, Reed Buntings, this most obliging Chaffinch, even if I did have to hang out of the window to get the shot ! a Coal Tit and a Willow Tit I managed to snap “accidentally” and didn’t see it untill I got home.

Shipping Out To Shipley

Coal Tit
I’m getting quite fond of the Shipley area, it’s a nice spot to have on your door step and if you poke about a bit you can quite easily remove yourself from the maddening crowd.

On this pleasant stroll of particular  interest were the UK Lagoons south of the main park, six oblong lagoons and at the moment a little over full with mostly rusty water but that doesn’t seem to bother the Teal, Gadwall, Tufted Duck and Little Grebe that live there, quite a little “des. Res” in fact and I’m quite surprised I haven’t found a wader in there yet, but I did find a Red Fox snoozing beneath a Silver Birch without a care in the world, the only skittish species seems to be the Gadwall.

On the way to Mapperley Wood Dougie and I must have hit on a Pheasant lek, we put seven up, Dougie was well pleased !

At the Mapperley hide I tried a bit of photography and I waited and waited for this Coal Tit, it was put of by the presence of Sqirrels and this shot was probabley the mony shot, I didn’t see it a gain.
