This looks very similar to the bird I remember seeing.  Finally somebody has got decent views of it and I think we can conclusively say CB.

I have a decent but old raptor id book, Flight Identification of European Raptors, Porter Willis & Christensen Nielson, 1974  juvenile rough legged  usuallly have a black belly but not always and lacks the terminal band, plus our bird appears to have a pale wing patch and have we considered Steppe Buzzard ? I think the ball is still in the air on this one. Has anyone ask our own Jim Steel ?

Regarding this dodgy buzzard

Today I saw a buzard sized bird overfly the canal going towards the erwash marsh

its underside was grey almost white with a bar on each wing about 2/3 the way along

did not notice tail feathers shape( too slow with binos)

is this the bird?

This may be academic now but with bird ID software I put CB and RLB up on a split screen for flight comparison and I'm sure the bird i saw at Bennerley did not fly like CB, it flew, shall I say more like a "serious raptor" Sadly, I think we missed this one. Cool

I think this "dodgy" buzzard was Bennerley way in the same time scale, if it had very white underparts, there is a rumor of hybrid CB/RTH's emanating from Attenborough, but I think this bird was CB, I did an ID check as soon as I got home. I notice from the note book I saw the bird on the 5th. of Dec.

I was level with it so couldn't see the tail or get a very good view of underparts and wing pattern.  The only thing that concerned me was the bulk, like I say, more reminiscent of Red-tailed Hawk.  I'm presuming it was just a CB but I daren't hope for RLB.

Simon – this is an area with a lot of Common Buzzards (at least 7 have eben in the air at once). There's at least one troublesome one among them, I particularly remember a very pale bird.

Any tail features? I'm assuming you're thinking it was a slight possibility for a Rough Legged? or something more unusual?

Just some supplementary info if anyone can get down.

I first picked it up at GR 448486 it flew to 448483 before turning west where I lost it over the railway line.

Was down at Aldercarr Flash today looking for Water Rail.  Went for a bit of a wander around and saw a very bulky Buzzard with strongly contrasting underparts.  It was so unusual that my first thought was red-tailed hawk, it resembled that more than buzzard.  I can't get down again until the weekend at the earliest.  If somebody else can, might be worth checking out.
