If by identification you want to species level, you've got no hope.  Nothing wrong with the photograph.  This is a type of parasitic wasp called an ichneumonid.  There are 3200 UK species.

"These [species] are currently classified into 34 subfamilies.  Rather few of these subfamilies are recognisable on simple morphological character states, rather, they tend to be recognisable on a combination of characters which occur convergently and in various permutations across different groups of ichneumonids." Identification Key to the Subfamilies of Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera), Gavin Broad, NHM.

Sorry it's a little bit of a cop out but they really are a difficult group.

Saw this in the garden today, went to get the camera and managed these two shots before it flew off. ID for it please (is it some kind of wasp?)

    hi simon sorry i have not got back to you the geneorator is out on loan its down south his dad took it on holiday in the caravan he uses it for the van as there id no elictric on site he wont be back for another 3 weeks so thats a no no for that shame about it just hope it works when he gets it down there ,, im up to the neck decorating but hope to be finished in a bit what date was the moth night will try and get as things have got a bit ectic this end went on that donkins site for the tubes there pretty cheap think there about £2 some think for a pack of ten i might have read it wrong i only want a couple just for ladybirde flys or small insects
