Hi Chris. I was talking to a guy with regards to Shipley lake. We reckon what's needed is something along the lines of a double hide similar to the ones at Rutland Water. That would attract loads of twitchers and photographers without to much disturbance to the birds. This is, as we all know, one of the best over-wintering waters in our area so needs little disturbance. I'm totally with you on the car parks. If the trust want as diverse a habitat as possible just leave these areas as they are and let nature do its job. There's enough woodland and reedbed around already and areas like this although not the prettiest are extremely important habitats. They are the WILDLIFE trust after all!! There are a couple of smaller ponds between Mapperley and Shipley. These would benefit from a bit of work and possibly a hide. There are some nice birds around here. I think there was some talk of putting screens up. These are OK but not so good in winter for standing behind for a few hours.
If you go along on Tuesday I've got the money for the website from the sale of my photo. It raised £40 profit so should keep the site going for a while.
Cheers
Paul

I've seen some of the consultation stuff for the first meeting and will try and go next week – be good to meet you there Paul (unless you're coming past Giltbrook which I doubt you are).
From what I hear the main concerns people have are around any future development of the lake…surely DWT need to represent their views (as major neighbouring land owners) and relaly push back on any obtrusive development. Also it'd be good to see a watchpoint over the lake from DWT land – and a buoyed off area to keep boats away from a breeding area, I've seen this work well in other areas (e.g. carsington).
The concerns I have are around the nice butterfly habitat around the old AA car parks, this is looking really good and attracted Dingy Skipper and Brown Argus last year – this year there has been some idiot on there with a digger removing the top soil (looking whats underneath?). I really hope this isn't the wildlife trust – we really need some consideration to the habitat (even if it looks like its waste land). These former brown field sites are amazing for wildlife and turning everything into woodland really isn't the way to go – it looks nice but there's plenty of existing woodland in the wider park area….

I'm going over to this so if anyone wants a lift let me know. You can find out a bit more by going to the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust website and clicking the link in the top right hand corner.
