Public Liability Insurance?

Thanks Marion, I've spoken to a few groups already and I'd like to set up some kind of walks site at some point. The councils are my next plan of attack – it makes it harder straddling three councils though.

I should get somewhere though soon.

Hi

Regarding guided walks I think you might be able to get public liability insurance through the Conservation Volunteers..  Alternatively guided walks could be done under the umbrella of a group with public liability insurance. Probably the best approach would be as advised, through Erewash Borough Council and the Derby and Greater Derbyshire Groundwork Trust. They might also sponsor a walk leaflet possibly dependent on who owns the Bennerley site.

David – good to see you last night (sorry we didn't get longer to talk), glad to see you on here.

I actually stumbled upon this website a few weeks ago, Chris, but have only just joined after you mentioned it at the BWF meeting. Great website by the way, and it is really refreshing to find information with a local wildlife relevance.

Just another thought, approaching the guided walks from a different angle. If you have a favorite site and want to get walkers interested in the area, then you could produce a guided walk leaflet based on a circular walk perhaps. If the leaflet was saved as a pdf document, it could be downloaded from this website and people could print it out themselves, keeping costs to a minimum. As long as the walk adheres to public rights of way, and you are not sending people into areas of potential danger, then I would guess you would be O.K on the legal side of things. The local council and Groundwork trusts/ walking groups may be able to offer some guidance also.

Thanks for the advice David/Steve. I think getting advice (or linking) with other groups will be the way forward. I'll investigate and speak with the Wildlife Trusts and RSPB.

To be honest I'd rather avoid all the faffing and just get out and do stuff, it's a shame that this kind of thing generates such an overhead.

I've currently suspended advertising any walks on the site. I'd like to run one in December at Bennerley but am currently working out where I stand with PLI…

My impression is that if I organise a walk and advertise it through this site, even if its free, then I would need PLI just in case I was negligent in any way (as "leader") because it is possible I would be liable to be sued.

While I sort out this I'm afraid I will have to hold off any organised walks (a very sad state of affairs).

You could try contacting the Erewash Ramblers group, Chris. They may be able to give you some advice (or you may be able to link in with them in some way).

At the minimum, I believe you would need a completed risk assessment, first aid kit and other safety related items, with some form of public liability insurance if you are going to lead groups. It may also be the case that walking groups affiliated to the Ramblers Association get additional support with insurance etc.

With Astro Societes the Federation of Astro Societies helps with PLI last I remember was 1M for about 20 quid a year

It might be worth getting in touch with RSBB or Attenbourough to see how they go on or is there an umbrella group for wildlife watchers??

I will have a word with the insurance I use as I have to have 5M for the planetarium (it used to be 1)

If I don't do anything give me a nudge
