Interesting guess Chris. I know there are Eagle Owls in the south of England but I've not heard of any in East Anglia. I was talking to some of the lads at work today and they were saying there has been an increase in sightings of Buzzards taking Kestrels from fenceposts. Sounds very similar to the Barn Owl story.

On a sad note a Barn Owl that had been roosting in a box we put up has been found dead. Apparently it was just skin and bones and had not eaten for weeks. I'm feeling a bit gutted at the minute.

Let's hope others can bounce back this year.

Eagle Owl?

It will be interesting to see how the Barn Owls locally have fared, they had a good summer and weren't affected last winter but this one has been particularly bad.

I read an article from the BTO the other day. It was saying what a devastating effect the cold weather has had on our beloved Barn Owls.

One part of the article interested me though. Somebody in Cambridgeshire had said there local Barn Owl had been predated by another bird of prey. "It swooped down and took it" said the author. I wondered what bird would do this. I guess the most obvious is a Buzzard but I've never heard of a Buzzard taking an owl before. Being Cambridgeshire there are also Marsh and Hen Harriers around. Anyone got any thoughts on this.
