Just checked through my records and it was February 2005 the last time I saw Waxwings on Smithurst Road. That time there were around 20 and they only stuck around for two days as far as I know.

Also January 1987 was when I saw my first ever Waxwing and I had been birding 6 years by then, now I see them just about every year in Notts or Debyshire. The big advantage now is the internet, so that you get to hear about them when they are still there, my first was at Skegness and only heard about that when on a day trip to Gibraltar point.

Nice photo Chris. That must be where they are disappearing to when they are not around my end of Smithurst.

Top of Smithhurst at the end of Halls Lane we had over 100 flying around us, very close quarters this afternoon. Seems its the best place in the area and they've been there for a few days apparently.

Here's a photo in poor light – I may be able to improve it post processing.

And just after Simon left we had about 50 in the large poplar just in front of where we parked. They then came to feed in a small tree right next to us. I'll post some photos later.

Paul

Chris. Sorry we missed you. I think we arrived just after you left.

Simon. Very nice to meet up. It would be good to do so more often. Your knowledge of birds far outweighs mine. I'm sure I could learn a thing or two.

30 or so in improved light, although a Sparrowhawk whipped through and they then disappeared for 30 minutes or so, only 10 returned so far.

Just after Chris had left, Paul arrived and we had a flyover of about 20.

Mark, they're there. Twice in the tall trees where you've reported them a few times. They go missing for a while and then reappear. c20 mixing with a bunch of Starlings. Simon and I had a trudge round but couldn't relocate them for a third time – but they'll be back I imagine.

No sign yet this morning, but with this freezing fog I cannot even see the trees that they frequent from the window.

Looks like you may have timed it badly, they have been around most of the day, but disappeared at 12.30pm for a couple of hours. They have just returned with numbers now reaching 70. They should be around tomorrow as they are feeding in a back garden on Acorn Avenue, this is the second Acorn Avenue from the Nottingham Road end of Smithurst the two ends do not meet up yet, and there are lots of berries left. I would recommend walking down Acorn Avenue to the bottom where you can cut through onto the fields beyond, they should be audible and are regularly flying over and perching up in the larger trees. They do occassionaly go missing for 15 mins or so, but have been showing really well.

Thanks Mark. I've been a drive down there earlier and then a walk with the buggy once I'd seen your post but missed them both times, the little one wasn't too happy in the snow so couldn't look for long. I'll try again by myself in the morning.

Just seen your photo in the Gallery – nice work.

Waxwings are still around they seem to prefer sitting in the tops of trees opposite the childrens play area along Smithurst Road, as they are whilst I type this looking from my window, but occassionally they will fly towards the trees behind Robina Drive. They spent 10 minutes in the back garden of my next door but one neighbour so I was able to get a couple of reasonable photos.

My Dad reports that Waxwings were back in the area this morning, 12 this time along Smithurst Road near the junction with Brackenfield Drive. No sign of them later in the day though.

No sign at all today, I guess they have moved on, but I am sure before this winter is over they will be back.
