Hi Chris. There was a pair Egyptian Geese in Shipley Park (Mapperley res. area) around June/July this year. I saw them a couple of times whilst out on my bike. I didn't realise this was a rare site for around here. I've seen a few over at Attenborough.

Be interesting to see if anything else of the list has cropped up recently.

Paul

Egyptian Geese certainly aren't rare round here, but I'd be interested to hear of any records away from Attenborough/Long Eaton. Thanks for this.

A while ago it was suggested we create a checklist for birds seen in the valley, well the time has come….

First of all I'm looking at the Notts/Derbys list and trying to knock obvious species off (I've only got so far down the list tonight), here are the ones I don't think have been recorded in the valley:

Green-winged Teal, Blue-winged Teal, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Surf Scoter, Bufflehead, Red Grouse, Black Grouse, Fulmar, Manx Shearwater, European Storm-petrel, Leach's Storm-petrel, Northern Gannet, Little Bittern, Squacco Heron, Cattle Egret, Great White Egret, Black Stork, White Stork, Glossy Ibis, Black Kite, White-tailed Eagle, Golden Eagle.

Let me know if you disagree (if you have date for any of the above even better)…you can either comment to the post below or use the forum topic.

I'd also ideally like to get last dates the below species were seen:

Bewick's Swan
Whooper Swan
Bean Goose
Greater White-fronted Goose
Barnacle Goose
Egyptian Goose
Ferruginous Duck – one seen at EM in Sept 07, also one in Jan 08 that relocated to Shipley Park then Loscoe Dam?
Greater Scaup
Eider – May 98 at Erewash Meadows is the last record I have seen
Long-tailed Duck
Common Scoter
Velvet Scoter
Smew
Red-breasted Merganser
Common Quail
Black-throated Diver
Great Northern Diver
Red-necked Grebe
Slavonian Grebe
Black-necked Grebe
Shag
Night Heron
Purple Heron
Montagu's Harrier
Northern Goshawk
Rough-legged Buzzard

I intend to carry on with this as I get time, further updates to come.
