On Days Like These

April 29, 2012 in Read Posts, Sightings, The Bennerley Birders Pages by DaveJ

Marsh Marigold

When it rains like today I sometimes get the urge to get out there, especially if the wind is north or north-easterly, ’cause you never know whats going to turn up, anything can happen, like Gannet or Kittiwake and both Gannet and Kittewake and others, has happened to me on days like these, today though I had to make do with three Wheatear’s, two at Bennerley and a female [again] at Chat Corner, most of the local “bods” had the good sense to “hunker down” so you hope for the occasional wind blown beauty to show up, not today though and that’s how it is on days like these !

Bennerley Marsh. 2 Wheatear, 11 Lapwing, Grey Heron, 2 Canada Goose, 5 Black-headed Gull, Cormorant. Chat Corner. 2 Lapwing, Wheatear, 3 Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Green Woodpecker. Shipley Gate. 6 Gadwall, 2 Pheasant.

Then There Was One.

April 28, 2012 in Latest Patch Sightings by PaulS

Only ten days ago a mallard had eight ducklings at Kirk Hallam Lake. Today she’s left with one. Nature is beautiful but takes no prisoners in the battle for survival.

Other sightings this morning included Canada Geese. Tufted duck. Four Moorhens nests. Mute Swans (still on nest). Mallard. Moorhen. Great Tit. GS Woodpecker (at nest site!!). Robin. Blue tit. Treecreeper. Wood Pigeon. Kingfisher (brief flypast). Crow.

And then there was one!!

You know you’re desperate for photographic material when you snap a Robin!!

New Kid on the Block

April 28, 2012 in Featured, Latest Patch Sightings, Photo Posts, Photo's. by Sam Viles

Hi all. After reading your site for a while I’ve finally decided to take the plunge and join you. I’m a 14 year old birder and photographer from Wollaton, and I can regularly be found on my local patch at Attenborough NR. Instead of introducing my self with words, I thought I’d do it with some photos I’ve taken at the patch this year (all taken with a Canon 40D and 100-400mm L).

Reed Bunting

Blue Tit

Weasel

Mute Swan

Great Tit

Red-crested Pochard

Cetti’s Warbler

Egyptian Goose

Long-tailed Tit

Wheatear

And a couple more from other local sites, this one from Wollaton Park…

Stock Dove

…and this one from Mapperley

Greater White-fronted Geese

Thank you for viewing, I hope you like the above as much as I did taking them. Any feedback is appreciated and I hope to be able to share some more with you when I manage to get out in the future,

Cheers, Sam :)

Smalley Dam 26/04/2012

April 27, 2012 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

Dropped in at Smalley Dam (end of Bell Lane, Smalley). Lovely spot this, with some community effort going on – ‘restoration work parties’ planned April 28, and May 12 and 26 at 9am if anyone interested.

Watched a G S Woodpecker drumming – good job they have that special brain-cushioning lining! Buzzard. Pair Coots with nest. Chiffchaff and Goldfinch singing. Several Swallows. 2 Blackcap singing. Bluebells just about fully out and some fine-looking Marsh Marigolds and an interesting interloper (from Canada, originally, I seem to recall..) Pink Purslane (Montia or Claytonia Sibirica).

Quick scoot around Brick Kiln Lane – quiet but I could see the leaves of Water Violet so I look forward to the flowers of this County rarity.
