Calendar Voting Open til Friday

October 24, 2011 in Latest News by ChrisLuv

We’ve had four lots of submissions for the calandar, in the posts linked below. Please can people vote by ranking each and every photo in each persons post in order of most suitable for the calendar to least suitable. I’d prefer to do this in the comments box under each of the posts.

Please don’t vote for your own photos, though if you haven’t entered then you can still vote – though only if you intend to have a calendar please. I thought it a bit mean to only limit voting to those who’ve entered a photo.

If anyone wants to submit a photo for inclusion but hasn’t done so then please let me know, either via email (webmaster (at) erewashvalleywildlife.org.uk) or in the comments below, there’s still time to get these on. Mick is the only regular submitter who hasn’t posted, so if he has any shots they may be added soon so check back later in the week. I also wonder if there are any shots from members of local groups, e.g. LENS, they’d like to submit (David?)

To decide the final results we have two options:

1. I’ll take the best three scoring photos per person, except for Don’s where I’ll take two. We’ll use the final “slot” to balance out the representation of the species, etc to make sure we have a balanced calendar. Doing the scores this way will mean we have everyone who’s submitted represented in the final calendar.

2. I’ll take the 12 top scoring shots (possibly adjusted if we have a problem with covering the diverseness of the wildlife) and use those, regardless of the photographer, this will mean we get the best quality, and the scoring system should ensure everyone is represented at least once anyway if it works out okay.

So please let me know how you want to decide, I’m happy with either option – or a third if you have a better one!

Housing plans for Straws Bridge.

October 18, 2011 in Latest News by PaulS

Just found out there are plans to build houses around Manor Floods (Ilkeston West) and Quarry Hill Road.

http://www.erewashcouncil.com/ldf/

This is going to destroy acres of wonderful species rich grassland for the sake of a few houses. It’s not as though there aren’t any empty houses in the area. I just can’t see the point. It’s building for buildings sake.

There is an action group set up with regards to Quarry Hill. You can check it out here.

http://www.quarryhillactiongroup.org/

There is a meeting of the Friends of Straws Bridge on the 10th November at Ilkeston Fire Station. I’ll ask questions of the Council representatives then.

Cheers

Paul

Calendar Possibilities – photographer approval needed, also “vote”!

October 10, 2011 in Latest News by ChrisLuv

Evening all. I’ve spent most of tonight sitting going through the 1,500 images submitted to the site to try and find some candidates for the Calendar I proposed last week (thanks for the feedback – overwhelmed with takers!). I’ve done some research and I think I can get an A3 calendar for about £10 but I need to check my 2 for 1 code works with so many orders! If it doesn’t the price may rise to £18 with the option of a smaller desk calendar for £10. Are people thinking the bigger the better? Does anyone know a printers who can do it cheaper? I’m going via internet sites at present.

So I’ve set about searching through the photos for photos that (a) show the Valley or its species in an interesting way (b) are varied (c) cover a range of seasons (d) show a breadth of the talent on the site. Thankfully its a fairly easy task with such quality.

I think I know who submitted some of these, some are mine, but I’m not sure on others, if your photo is below you will need to agree for their photo being used in a limited edition calender that won’t be sold for profit (I’m afraid we can’t afford to pay photographers for using their photos – though they truly deserve it, but I’m sure you appreciate the score). Credits will be given in the calendar for each photo and copyright will remain with the photographer for the photo, I will ask again to use it in any future publications. If your photo is featured below and you’d rather it wasn’t used wither let me know below or via webmaster (@) erewashvalleywildlife.org.uk and I’ll remove it from the list below (no reason needed – its your photo, you’ve every right to decide how its used!). Also if your photo is below and you don’t mind it being used please contact me to let me know its okay for it to be used and if you have a bigger version I can use for print, some are quite small.

If your photo isn’t featured please don’t be offended, I quickly skimmed submissions, I may have missed some. If you have a super shot you think could make the grade then let me know. Also if you feel a species or group isn’t represented that should be then let me know.

Finally, can people vote for 12 photos they’d like to see in the final piece. I’ll then take the images with the best votes – there may be more than 12 in all chosen as some will be needed for the front cover – maybe a college.

Recent site problems

September 24, 2011 in Latest News by ChrisLuv

Apologies for the recent downtime for the site, unfortunately runnign a site like this is a constant battle against cyber criminals who wish to hijack the site to host fake sites (such as banking “phishing” sites). These people will write script that scour the internet and look for vulnerabilities in the code in the components we use on the site, when they find one they will use it to inject their own scripts to install these fake sites.

At no point was anyone trying to target users of this site, the hacking is of a much more international flavour than that. However it is worth remembering simple security fundamentals when working online.

1. Use a secure password made up of numbers and letters
2. Use different passwords across a number of sites, not just one across all your email, bank, this site, etc.
3. Change your password regularly
4. Watch for suspicious activity e.g. EVW will NEVER ask for credit card details etc.

Like I say, users of this site were never in danger and the hosting company quickly spotted the problem and stopped all access to the site so I could resolve the problem.

Thank you for all the kind messages and support over the last few weeks, its good to know the hard work that goes into keeping this site running is appreciated. It gets you down when people try and undo your hard work and the support of the site community is what keeps this site going.

Any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

If you notice any features etc that I haven’t got working yet please let me know, I had to rebuild the site almost from scratch using a backup so there may be a few niggles.

The forum is still down while I investigate if that has any vulnerabilities that caused the security to fail.

Cheers,
Chris (webmaster)

Introducing the EVW Biopedia

July 25, 2011 in Latest News by ChrisLuv

To celebrate our 10,000 post (edit: well we’re nearly at 3,00 published posts but 10,000 database entities) we’ve decided to launch a new section to the website – the “Biopedia” – an encyclopedia of photos and information on some of our species across the valley area. We hope it will grow to show good places to find our regular species, photos of species you might not come across yourself – e.g. insects, and photos and information of and on rare migrants.

It will take some time to grow, but we’re sure it will be of use to people visiting the Valley, and useful information to those of us who are local and looking for information – or just somewhere to share our photos and expertise.

For more information check out the new menu page at the top menu bar.

Thanks and well done everyone on so many posts in a year and a half. When we started I don’t think anyone expected the site to grow and attract such a following and such talented contributors.
