January 2, 2012 in Read Posts by DaveJ

A happy new year to every one and may it bring lots of new wildlife and lets promote it where ever it resides. We wish ourselves peace and happiness so lets do what we can to ensure that our wildlife achieves peace and happiness, lets endeavour to reach a a better understanding of how important environment, habitats and the wild creatures are, in whatever part of the world they exist.

A Nice Day A Last

January 2, 2012 in Read Posts, Sightings by DaveJ

A much nicer day today, a nice crisp start and good visibility. I was hoping for a few Siskin and Redpoll but got Redwing instead.

A good count of Shoveler today but no Goosander on Shipley Lake.

A single female Goosander and two Buzzard over at

Mapperley Reservoir along with a few more Great Crested Grebe than there has been.

As usual I waited for darkness to fall to look for owls and tonight with a two-thirds moon shining was perfect for owls.

A Tawny Owl was calling from the edge of the “Mound” and a dark shape made its way from the direction of the sound – it’s on my list !

Woodside NR. 95 Canada Goose, 23 Gadwall, 83 Wigeon, 32 Shoveler, 16 Pochard, 6 Great Crested Grebe, 5 Cormorant, 350 Black-headed Gull, 2 Common Gull,  8 Long-tailed Tit, 10 Redwing, Tawny Owl. Mapperley Reservoir. 12 Canada Goose, 30 Tufted Duck, Goosander [f.] 6 Great Crested Grebe, 5 Cormorant, 2 Buzzard.

Day The First

January 1, 2012 in Read Posts, The Bennerley Birders Pages by DaveJ

Not quite the “dusk till dawn” patch-watch I was hoping for and definitely not the weather I Would have liked but it is the first day of a new year and so some effort is demanded, even though it was hard to see through the wind, rain and murk. The corporate pond as I call it, next to Osbourn’s Pond held three Goosander, two males and a female, which was just as well there were no more any where, not even on Shipley Lake. By the time I got to Shipley Lake it was too dark to see much at all, a small group of wigeon, a trio of Shoveler, a couple of Pochard and a single Great Crested Grebe.
These grainy dull photographic efforts were the best i could manage without an infra-red camera, but it goes to show how well our mentor taught us, before I would just choose auto, point and hope for the best. Determined to get a couple of shots for the first proper post I upped the ISO and knocked the exposure down a couple of clicks and presto, two grainy shots better than none !
Bennerley Marsh. 25 black-headed Gull, 70 Redwing, Song Thrush, 3 Bullfinch. Eastwood Meadows. Little Grebe [Erewash Canal] Grey Heron, Song Thrush, 12 Redwing. Woodside NR. 35 Wigeon, 5 Gadwall, 3 Shoveler, 2 Pochard, Great Crested Grebe.

Wet but not so windy !

A Study In Roof Tiles !

I took this thro’ the window, trying out the under exposed theory ! I think I’ve got the idea.

Then it was back out in the rain and on to Woodside by way of Bennerley and the North Marsh.
The birds appeared to have more sense than mes, not a lot about, a few northern thrush’s, Mistle Thrush’s and little else.
I got to Woodside and Shipley lake with just enough light left to do a partial “duck count” It was a filthy evening but the drake members of a group of fourteen Goosander shone like beacons through the gloom – nice !

A Derbyshire Garden. 2 Collard Dove, 2 Blue Tit, Robin, 25 Redwing, Mistle Thrush, 3 Blackbird, 10 Starling, Goldfinch, 8 House Sparrow. Bennerley. 11 Fieldfare, 35 Redwing, 14 Mistle Thrush, 40 Black-headed Gull. Woodside NR. 35 Gadwall, 90 Wigeon, 14 Goosander, 5 Cormorant, 250 Black-headed Gull.

Bennerley Sightings

December 28, 2011 in Read Posts, Sightings by davejsblog

Hope every one out there had the Christmas they hoped for and thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. I spent the holiday with a very unwelcome guest, a rather nasty micro-organism that kept me confined to the “telly” or the computer, still at least I got to experience a bit of wildlife, even if it was micro-life !

Managed to get out on Wednesday but Bennerley looked very sad and derelict and even with working the dog across the coal plant only managed to put a single magpie up ! so no action shot of a rising Snipe today ! Actually, this is a photographic technique I’m trying to perfect, send the dog in, put the bird up, shoot the rising bird with the camera, easy ? no – I haven’t managed it on one single occasion ! It’s so much easier with a gun !

The only notable events today were a great number of Pied Wagtails feeding on the settling tanks in the treatment works and the ever-present large mixed flock of corvids and for me any large gathering of birds, be it storks, corvids or wagtails  is a pleasure.

Bennerley Marsh. Grey Heron, Kestrel, 45 Redwing. Water Treatment Works. 220 Pied Wagtail, 200 jackdaw. Chat Corner. 35 Black-headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed gull, 30 Fieldfare, 3 Mistle Thrush.

A couple from the garden

A couple of seconds later this little blighter had made off with the whole fat ball.

Maybe we could run a “best caption” competition.  The winner gets to post the next image(s).
