Max. Temp. 8°C (46°F), Wind Direction: North Westerly, Wind Speed: 6.mph, Visibility: Cloud, Sun,Moderate,Sunset: 16:00 GMT.

Close Encounters Of The Jack Snipe Kind. I had already seen one Jack Snipe get up on the Coal Dispersal Point along with a couple of Snipe when I almost stepped on a second “Jack” and as it rose skywards there was a brief moment when time stood still and with the tiny bird at eye level and just for a nano second I got a superb view of this little gem, it really is amazing in these very rare occurrences how quickly the human brain [even mine !] reacts, with its wings spread I saw every minute detail, its short bill, dark crown and split eye stripe all in a split second – Brilliant Bennerley !

Bennerley. 115 Wigeon, 40 Teal, 20 Shoveler, 2 Jack Snipe, 2 Snipe, 82 Golden Plover, 75 Lapwing, Grey Heron, Buzzard, Grey Wagtail. Chat Corner, 2 Snipe, Kestrel, 3 Meadow Pipit, 17 Redwing, 7 Fieldfare, 1 Wren.

Max. Temp. 8°C (46°F), Wind Direction: East South Easterly, Wind Speed: 11mph, Visibility: Moderate, Sunset: 16:03 GMT.

I took the “clockwise” route around Bennerley for a change, there were a lot of Redwings about, but not so many Fieldfare, a good count of Snipe at the North Marsh, a duo of Stonechats were at Chat Corner, a good number of Lapwings at Bennerley along with plenty of Teal, a trio of Shovelers but just two Wigeon, if I had stayed to count the Black-headed Gulls heading of to roost for the night there would have been many hundreds – I stopped counting at one hundred and seventy !

Shipley Gate. 30 Goldfinch, 60 Redwing, 35 Fieldfare, Sparrowhawk [m.] North Marsh. 2 Grey Heron, 24 Snipe, 70 Redwing. Chat Corner. Kestrel. 2 Stonechat, 68 Redwing, 12 Fieldfare, Grey Heron. Bennerley. Green Woodpecker, 4 Mistle Thrush, 2 Bullfinch, 84 Lapwing, 38 Teal, 3 Shoveler, 2 Wigeon, 170 Black-headed Gull.

Max. Temp. Wind Direction: North Westerly, Wind Speed: 10 mph, Visibility: Cloud, Moderate, Sunset: 16:09 GMT.

The plan today was to do a bit of “digiscoping” but luck and the light just wasn’t with me,  consequently the photos in this post were all taken with standard photography using the Nikon S1 and no ‘scope !

Bennerley was buzzing – almost, with ten whole Snipe on the “coal” plus Lapwing, Wigeon and Teal on the marsh plus a few Meadow Pipit and a single Buzzard at Chat Corner.

Shipley Lake held eight Goosander plus a few Shoveler and Pochard, Straws Bridge was mostly Black-headed Gulls plus a few Common Gulls and a few Pied Wagtails feeding along the bank edges. Woodside in the dark turned up just one Tawny Owl calling, it was distant and probably up on Shipley Hill.

Bennerley. 125 Wigeon, 52 Teal, 110 Black-headed Gull, 3 Common Gull, 45 Lapwing, 10 Snipe, Kestrel, 3 Bullfinch. Chat Corner. Buzzard, Kestrel. 3 Meadow Pipit. Shipley Lake. 58 Wigeon, 8 Goosander, 7 Shoveler, 5 Pochard, 6 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Grey Heron, 6 Cormorant. Straws Bridge. 330 Black-headed Gull, 11 Common Gull, 5 Pied Wagtail. Woodside. Tawny Owl, Greenfinch.

Max. Temp. 9°C (48°F) Wind Direction: South Westerly, Wind Speed: 6mph, Visibility: Sun, Cloud, Moderate, Sunset: 16:20 GMT.

Bennerley lived up to its name today, it was in fact a “marsh” with a good flood cover a fair sized area and there was water on either side of Newtons Lane for a change. Good counts of ducks, gulls [black-headed] and even Buzzards with four putting in an appearance, plus half a dozen Snipe and a single Jack Snipe. No “chats” today at Chat Corner but a nice few Meadow Pipit and even more gulls.

A slow start up the hill at Shipley, just on Grey Squirrel in Shipley Wood ! but thing are getting better, slowly, on Shipley Lake but just a few Gadwall on the Shipley View Lagoons. Straws Bridge was worth the look with my first Goosander of the Winter and a Water Rail in Pewit Carr. Again Woodside was quiet with a pair of Lesser Redpoll being the highlight, but a nice day and a nice walk.

Bennerley. 125 Wigeon, 32 Teal, 11 Shoveler, 2 Gadwall, 32 Lapwing, 1 Jack Snipe, 6 Snipe, Grey Heron, 220 Black-headed Gull, 4 Buzzard, 25 Goldfinch, 5 Greenfinch, 5 Redwing, Green Woodpecker. Chat Corner. 240 Black-headed Gull, 28 Meadow Pipit, 2 Reed Bunting, 3 Pheasant, Kestrel. Shipley Lake. 45 Wigeon, 7 Pochard, 6 Teal, 2 Gadwall. 6 Great Crested Grebe, Shipley View Lagoons. 7 Gadwall, 1 Fieldfare. Straws Bridge. 3 Pochard, 1 Goosander [m.] 12 Pied Wagtail. Pewit Carr. Water Rail. Woodside. 2 Lesser Redpoll, Green Woodpecker, 3 Pheasant, Jay.

If anyone is wondering what the two asterix’s are in the weather info. are, they are to tell me that today persisted down with rain ! still it was worth getting a little damp for a Jack Snipe and a couple of Stonechats,  through the murk I could see one of the Stonechats was female but with both birds being so wet and bedraggled I could only say that the second bird was probably a male.

First “sighting” of the day, a Red Admiral in the garden. A nice sunny, chilly day, some nice birds too, including Stonechats and Lesser Redpolls, plus the “northern” thrushes and the wildfowl numbers continue to grow, not a bad day at all.

Bennerley Lodge. Red Admiral. Bennerley. 65 Wigeon, 14 Teal, 55 Lapwing,  5 Snipe, 3 Grey Heron, 15 Redwing, 9 Fieldfare, 10 Long-tailed Tit, 4 Greenfinch. Chat Corner. 3 Stonechat, 2 Reed Bunting, 6 Lesser Redpoll, 14 Redwing, 6 Fieldfare, 1 Snipe, Grey Heron, Kestrel.

Max. Temp. 13°C (55°F), Wind Direction: West South Westerly, Wind Speed: 9 mph, Visibility: Sun, Cloud, Good, Sunset: 16:33 GMT.

Wildfowl numbers are creeping up on Shipley Lake, but the “hotspot” today was Shipley Hill with flocks of Redwing, tit and finch flocks, including a couple of Goldcrests and a Barn Owl over the opencast mine – among the pigeons ! I think it came out of farm buildings between the hill and the mine.

Woodside. 3 Cormorant, Mistle Thrush, Green Woodpecker. Shipley Lake. 7 Cormorant, 6 Gadwall, 6 Pochard, 4 Teal, 42 Wigeon, 5 Great Crested Grebe, Grey Heron.. Shipley Park.  30 Goldfinch, 4 Mistle Thrush, Grey Heron, Shipley Hill. Barn Owl [ over the opencast mine] 2 Goldcrest, 40 Goldfinch, 12 Greenfinch, 90 Redwing, 3 Jay. Mapperley Reservoir. 4 Great Crested Grebe, 55 Redwing. Mapperley Wood. 25 Redwing, 30 Goldfinch, 6 Pheasant.
