Stanton Butterfly Site and Hex Pools 31/05/2013

May 31, 2013 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

Returned from Scotland …. the Dingies were calling me…

At least 35 Dingy Skipper at Stanton, also 2 Common Blue, 3 Small Heath,  Brimstone, Peacocks, Small Copper, G V and Large White, an Orange Tip and a Lizard! In the wider area a few more Dingies, Small Heath and the commoner butterflies. Cinnabar Moths. Sadly, no Brown Argus. 2 Four Spotted Chasers were my first Odonata of the season. Two cracking Marsh Orchids were a tad early.

At the Hex Pools, 5 more Dingies and the commoner butterflies including 3 Speckled Woods, a Common Blue Damselfly and a Blue Tailed, too. 6 young Coot growing up nicely now on the pools and 3 Reed Warbler singing. Lesser Whitethroat singing as were 2 Skylark over the adjacent Woodside Meadows. Family party of Long Tailed Tits. Great Spotted Woodpecker flew across Mapperley Wood and several Swifts were hunting high up – I don’t think they have settled to breed yet.  A Hobby dashed through!

Fun Guys !

May 22, 2013 in Photo Posts, Sightings, The Bennerley Birders Pages by Bennerley

Found these two specimens on my recent rambles, the first I think is some kind of bracket but I gained my knowledge of fungi mainly from Tesco’s ! the second that looks like “black stuff” could be just that,  “black stuff” or doggie do, or whatever, but I seem to remember some years ago in Leicestershire,  some very keen fungi snappers getting worked up by something similar and I’ve not seen this one in Tesco’s.

PS. I think I’ve cracked it !

Bennerley To Cossall

May 19, 2013 in Sightings, The Bennerley Birders Pages by Bennerley

A very nice day around the Cossall area, a Hobby at Spring Wood was a surprise, as was a Land Rover full of men armed to the teeth ! fortunately it wasn’t the Taliban, just the owner of Spring Wood out for a spot of “skeet” shooting – Ppppullll ! Nice chaps really and  it got me a few brownie points as far as the wood was concerned.

I found a nice display of Yellow Archangel in Old Moor Wood and alas some very nasty fly tipping, which was duly reported, complete with an address kindly provided by the perpetrators !

Just spent a week at a dull wet Norfolk. Managed to spend a bit of time with the birds in between keeping the grand kids in control. Here’s a few shots I took, hope you like them.

Birds of prey Photography Day

May 15, 2013 in Latest Patch Sightings by colin penny

Dear All

I wondered if any of  you could help with something.  DWT have screwed up big time with a birds of prey flight photography day they had planned. They’ve booked the guy with the birds for THIS Sunday, 19th May when the event is advertised for the 20th July. He is saying if they cancel he will charge them anyway. Do you know anyone who might want to go on the day this Sunday? Its £60 for the day. If they can get enough to break even it will be better than paying for nothing. Could you pass this around to anyone you think might be interested.
Cheers

Colin Penny
