Shipley Hill 30/12/2012

December 31, 2012 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

Took a walk up to Shipley Hill to look for Hawfinch (one was reported earlier in the month from SCP and I saw my first there in about 1971!) but to no avail. Lots of Long-tailed Tit, Nuthatch, Great-spotted Woodpecker and a couple of Jays. Common Gull moving South down the Nutbrook Valley as were a pair of Goosander. Large numbers of Coot, Wigeon and Gadwall on Shipley Lake, together with a few Pochard, half a dozen Shoveler, 3 Great Crested Grebe and some Tufties. Distant Kestrels hunting and a single Buzzard soared past. Sparrowhawk at Shipley View.

A new bird for me over Shipley Hill – a pair of Ravens no less. Looked to be well at home…

New Season Singers 26/12/2012

December 28, 2012 in Latest Patch Sightings by Jim Steele

Meant to say – my second ‘new season’ bird singing on Boxing Day by the Hex Pools – two Great Tits. First was Dunnock back at the beginning of December. I don’t count Robin, Wren and Collared Dove as they sing more or less year round.

Be interested to receive reports of other first hearings…
