The Norfolk Journal 2012 (And A Little Quiz).
January 19, 2012 in Holiday and Trip Reports by PaulS
First time this year I’ve had chance to visit Salthouse, on the North Norfolk coast. It was a beautifully sunny afternoon, a little windy but not enough to spoil an hour with the birds. The Western Sandpiper is still around but I didn’t have time to go looking. I did manage to see the following. Lapwing (around 3-400 in an amazing swirling flock). Redshank. Shelduck. Teal. Turnstone. Snow Bunting. Herring Gull. Lesser Black Backed Gull. Black Headed Gull. Goldfinch. Pheasant. Red Partridge. Year list up to 69.
A few shots from the hour.
And finally the little quiz. How many Goldfinch can you see in this picture??
Cheers
Paul
As requested by Chris, here’s where the birds are.

Some great shots there Paul. I can see 6 which at this time of night isn’t bad.
I can only see 8 now
I’m sure I got 9 earlier
good shots
btw is it nice outside at the moment as I’m very busy with Stargazing Live and have been confined to the planetarium
not been outside for a week help!!
Excellent photos! Think I can see 11 ? It is very early in the morning though so maybe seeing double on a couple
Only 6 Maggie??? I reckon there’s more than that
Cheers Steve.
Stargazing live is brilliant. Glad they’ve been mentioning light pollution. It’s not until you get into a truly dark area you realise how amazing the sky is.
Phil, That’s a very good answer. I’ll not say if it’s right or not just yet to give others a go.
Thanks for the comment about the shots. Always appreciated!
great pictures Paul,think i got 12
Great pics as usual Paul, some great closeups. I got 10! No answers the same yet…..
I thought initially I’d got 11 but can only find 10. So I’ll stick on 10.
11 for me paul could be 12 but not sure could be a twig but will settle for 11 great photos as well
take care every one
mick
Another super set of shots,I`ll go for 11.
I think 11 as well so well done if that’s what you got and if not “should’ve gone to Specsavers”.
(other opticians are available).
coem on Paul – publish a pic with them circled I don’t believe you!
“publish a pic with them circled I don’t believe you!”
Done Sir!!
Good shot of that species very local to Norfolk, Paul – the Circle Finch!
Jim
Doesn’t even come up on goole does Circle Finch. Where does the name come from Jim?
Come on Paul. The little red circle finch as shown in the final pic. They like sparse vegetation on shingle beaches and hang around in flocks of 11.
OK! I get it now. Thought Jim had an obscure colloquial name for them.
What confused me was the red marks are obviously more ovoid than circle
Ok I believe you now but sure you added one into the left hand side since I checked, I can’t trust you after that spot the difference
now lets do one with starlings coming in to roost.
Starlings. I’ve got a nice shot of some bees on a honeycomb. Might keep everyone entertained for about a week counting them!!
Well, I didn’t want to show off, but in fact there are 4 Circle Finches and 6 Ovoid Finches!
