Lesser Spotted Woodpecker – Mapperley and Shipley
January 22, 2012 in Latest Patch Sightings by ChrisLuv
A LSW has now been reported by Mick lest week at Mapperley, and now I’ve heard another report from up on the house on the hill at Shipley CP.
So keep ‘em peeled!

Think I mentioned before we’ve seen one from the hide at Mapperley and that was way back in winter 2010/11. Nice to know they’re being seen regularly at the moment. Wonderful little birds.
My boyfriend saw a lesser spotted woodpecker on Mapperley Road last week, right next to the allotments. He didn’t know what it was, but I pulled up a picture from a google search which showed it exactly. I have never seen one myself, but there are normally a whole host of different tits and robins outside my window.
You’re fella is very lucky Jeanette, they are becoming quite unusual birds.
Hey that’s strange given what I wrote recently! I hope it is back! It used to be found in the trees around Mapperley Pond and in the woodland on Shipley Hill.
LSWoodie is very vocal in March/early April and perhaps a bit before, so if you don’t know its call it’s worth looking it up (reminiscent of a Kestrel call) and the drumming is softer and more rattling than GSWoodie.
