I read about a guy who took a small piece of lint-like material and with needle and thread [remember that !] and made a small envelope that fitted over the flash. Now I am definitely no expert on photographic accessories but I wondered if this improvised set-up might work ?

I think depending on how close you get to your subject you’d probably get a bit of shadow from your lens hood, I’m assuming you’d use it for macro? I think you might have to try it and see, certainly no harm in trying but I suspect you wouldn’t get great results.
I’d have to agree with Chris. This method acts as a very basic flash diffuser. The cover over the flash acts to spread the light particles giving a softer feel to the light hitting the subject. It works much the same as the box diffuser I showed you how to make with one exception. The flash is still way behind the front of the lens. This means you are likely to get a big shadow from said lens when you are doing macro shots. The box diffuser channels the light to the end of the lens reducing lens shadow.
So this method is fine for normal photography (in fact I have a diffuser permanently fixed to my flash unit) but for macro I’d “invest” in the orange juice flash
Thanks chaps, as i said i know nothing about these things, it was based on the needle work cotton “willie warmer” I mentioned. I see where things are going with these ideas, I do have an idea to improve things,an extention device which will will put it in the same bracket as your original idea, Paul. Thanks for your thoughts, Dave J.
