Roesel’s Bush Cricket.

September 4, 2011 in Crickets and Grasshoppers by PaulS

Roesel’s crickets are one of ten species of bush crickets in the UK. The yellow stripe behind the head is the key identification feature. These have been recorded by other EVW members at Shipley Country Park. This is a great find as these Crickets were confined to coastal areas and have only recently started to colonise inland areas. There is another form of this insect (f. diluta), in which the wings reach beyond the tip of the abdomen. This form appears predominantly during hot summers and enables the species to extend its geographical range rapidly while conditions are suitable.

Crickets can be distinguished from Grasshoppers by there longer antenna and continuous chirp (as opposed to an on off chirp in grasshoppers).
