Side keels curved inwards, bulge on costal margin of forewing, wings extend beyond hind knees, black wedges do not reach hind margin of pronotum: Field Grasshopper Chorthippus brunneus (widespread and common)
Side keels curved inwards, bulge on costal margin of forewing, wings not longer than hind knees, black wedges meet hind margin of pronotum: Heath Grasshopper Chorthippus vagans (southern heaths)

Brilliant Simon. Now we just need some photos to illustrate these characteristics, I’ll try and add some when I get time.
That’s an excellent write up Simon. I wonder though if a key to some of the words might help. I’m guessing lots of people, including myself until very recently, wouldn’t know a pronotum from a jam sandwich. Something like….
Pronotum. Where front legs are.
Femora. Upper back leg.
I’d carry on but I’m running out of time,ie my teas going cold
Might make it a bit easier for some and not sound so scarey.
