The Bennerley Boys Hit Carsington Water

February 27, 2011 in Read Posts by davejsblog

Oystercatchers

With the Bennerley Boys being in full cry and baying for birds, the plan today was to look for raptors, possibly including goshawks, other target species were Great Northern Diver at Carsington and Hawfinch at Cromford.

The raptor search was marred by the weather, the rain and lack of sun greatly reduced the chance of a displaying pair of Goshawks, so this part of the trip  became a dedicated “reccie” patrol searching for suitable woodland for a  visit in the very near future and on a sunny day. It was actually nice cruising around the narrow lanes with very little traffic to contend with.

Down at Cromford the plan took a down turn, absolutely no Hawfinches ! not a one, just  half a dozen Mistle thrush, a Nuthatch and a Sparrow Hawk, at least we’d had a raptor !

Up at Carsington the weather deteriorated further but the birding improved, it didn’t take long to locate a Great Northern Diver from a hide but it was distant and it was decided to take in the waders and wildfowl in front of the hide, Goldeneye, Oystercatcher, the arrival of a party of Curlew, have lunch and then move closer. The bird was refound and there was great joy, but not Jim’s Goshawk jig !

At last we had our raptors, minus Goshawk and mainly Buzzards plus Sparrow Hawk and Kestrel, we saddled up and hit Cromford for the second time and for the second time no Hawfinch, the Bennerley Boys were homeward bound.
