A nice day, a nice steady bit of birding but still no water back at bennerley, just a lone Grey Heron and a few Wood Pigeon. Stretched the legs as far as Shipley Park, circumnavigated the lake, took a couple of snaps, the light was not good and so I decided to go poking and prodding about in the undergrowth looking for likely locations for Woodcock and Owls, Woodcock habitat is fairly plentiful so I'm hopeful there for a connection in the new year, plenty of Owl hide a ways too, especially Tawny.
With night falling I headed of the the old car parks area, poured a cup of tea and waited, hopefully for Short Eared Owl but the only thing happening was wave after wave of Jackdaw heading for Mapperley Reservoir. I think it will have to get a little colder for Short Eared Owl, I’ll try again when the brass monkey beckons !
Cotmanhay. 2 Coal Tit [garden feeders] 70 Black-Headed Gull, 5 Common Gull. Botany Bay. 4 Common Snipe, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 3 Bullfinch. Chat Corner. 4 Meadow Pipit, 2 Reed Bunting, Kestrel. Shipley Lock. Kingfisher, 11 Redwing, Mistle Thrush. Bentleys Plantation. 2 Jay. Shipley Lake. 19 Gadwall, 12 Wigeon, 7 Shoveler, 3 Pochard, 4 Little Grebe, 9 Great Crested Grebe, Kingfisher, 4 Grey Heron. Shipley Country Park. 470 Jackdaw [going to roost at Mapperley] 5 Pheasant, 14 Redwing, 25 Lapwing [over]
