Bennerley Marsh

Good trip out on Sunday am. Snow had fallen and the first thing I saw was a daring cat sat on the iced-over canal – hope the poor thing made it off again.

Walking down towards the viaduct from the fishermans carpark on Nottingham Canal the iced-marsh had very little on offer, so I continued to the path that runs to the viaduct. Lots of redwing (~100) in this area, tried for photos but they’re not easy to get close too. Can’t complain too much at my best though (above) – not 100% happy though. P.S> look closely – you can see its wearing a ring, shame I didn’t notice at the time as I’d have liked to get the scope on it.

Continuing on down towards the viaduct and old coal plant there were common garden birds, but not too much else.

“Chat corner” had a bit more on offer. I waited for the Stonechats and finally got two males. As I struggled to photograph then I hopped into the long grass (a bit naughty) and disturbed a Jack Snipe, a brief glimpse as it flew off was enough to spot the streaked head and short bill, and so I’m very happy with that record; my first locally.

Also had three Common Snipe, a cormorant, teal, mallard all fly over. A kestrel was also hunting in the area. Another two firsts (since I started going in July) at Bennerley for me was a Common Gull and Golden Plover - both of which flew over but offered better views back at the main marsh.

On return to the main marsh I had:

~10 Golden Plover

~50 Lapwing (also 70 over N->S)
~30 Black-headed Gull
2 Lesser Black Backed Gull
Redwing galore
Several snipe (at least 4 came in as I was there and few more on the marsh)
2 female bullfinch
6 Goldfinch

Not a bad day at all.

Recovering from a long night out, so had Friday off. After a morning in bed I took a walk round EM. Not much about to be honest. Fieldfares and Redwing were all around but not in vast numbers. Usual wildfowl but other than that a fairly disappointing (and freezing cold) day.

Lapwings

Lapwings are a fairly common sight over Bennerley Marsh in winter, but in past years there were many times more.

A few pairs breed in the spring, sadly, there is some disturbance of various sorts, so not all the chicks survive.
